Count warheads. Russia is still a superpower. Their economy is leaps and bounds what it was during the Cold War, as is their technology because they got access to pretty much everything available in the West. They drive Hondas and BMW's and talk on smart phones now. They've also been plowing money into modernization. Though still far behind the West, they're catching up as long as oil prices remain high. Pushing the US out of the Middle East is one way to get those prices back up.

Where they cut back is in the sheer size of their conventional forces. They also realized how vulnerable their forces were to Western weapons, and so unlike the Cold War, they're not deluded into thinking their conventional forces are a match for the West. Thus they're not going to play that game. With nuclear forces they actually have the advantage in throw weight and number of warheads. As long as they make it very plain (which they've been doing) that any war between Russia and the West will go nuclear, the West can't risk attacking them. But Obama is going to do it anyway because he's a narcissistic delusional dumbass. So if the balloon goes up, no biggie, because liberals will be vaporized far far out of proportion to population. Eliminate about 20 of the biggest cities in the US and the Democrats will never again break 100 electoral votes, and they will never again threaten Russia.

And in Hillary they see an existential threat. She got on the debate stage and started ranting about the Russians like she was Joe McCarthy. If we believed her bullshit we'd probably go through Hollywood rooting out Russian sympathizers.

We're not talking television. We're talking about the extremely alarming statements and actions in Russia. They conducted nuclear defense drills with 40 million people taking part. Their TV is telling people how to prepare for the coming nuclear conflict. People on the streets are explaining how long it will take them, personally, to get to the nearest bomb shelter. They are in full-bore 1950's nuclear war paranoia while we're watching The Kardashians" and talking about what an awful groper Donald Trump is.

Well, obviously I don't get the information about the rest from the US media, who have decided to pretty much black out any real news that isn't about Trump groping somebody. If you check non-US news sites, you can read all about Russia's civil defense drills and near panic about the coming nuclear war. They even interviewed Soviet jail inmates about it, and the inmates said they know they'll die in the first attacks because the jails have no shelters of any kind, nor was their ever a plan to get them through a nuclear war. They're resigned to their fate.

"We’ve had it with American abuse over Syria," the show’s host, Evgeny Kiselyov, told his audience. "Impudent behavior," from the U.S. towards Russia, he said, can now take on "nuclear dimensions."

Anti-Americanism is not rare on Russian state news, nor is an inclination for the apocalyptic. But more notable than the intensity of the warnings has been how Russian government ministries have joined in the alarms in recent weeks. Since September, Russia has conducted a nationwide civil defense drill, purportedly involving 40 million people, preparing them for catastrophes -- among them nuclear fallout. Russia’s military announced who would run the country in the event of war and ran an exercise simulating that in the south.

Even more bluntly, Russia announced this week it was moving nuclear-capable ballistic missiles into its Northern European enclave, Kaliningrad, putting them within striking distance of Western capitals. In the same week, Russia test-fired 3 intercontinental ballistic missiles.​
