It's really all or nothing with you Americans sometimes

Full bore socialism is a terrible idea

Just as poorly regulated, hyper capitalism is

The solution lies in the middle - well but sensibly regulated capitalism fueling substantial tax revenue that provides great representation in terms of things like health care, social safety nets, infrastructure, public safety, etc

Generally speaking, this system does work well and the people who live under it are very happy with it

What percentage of that "Boomer wealth" belonged to Trump and his ilk? No, don't answer that. Much easier to blame your parents' generation as a whole for everything that's wrong in the world...

I don’t want full bore socialism.

But unless there are some significant structural changes that and/or breakup is where the US is heading.

And not very likely to happen, either. What Americans think of as "full bore socialism" isn't even close to what true socialism actually is (centralized control of all the means of production).

Heck, a good percentage of Americans still freak out over "Obamacare", which is a long way off from socialized medicine.

It's funny how Canada, and many European nations, frequently blow the United States out of the water when it comes to surveys of "happy" populations.

Canada and EU countries typically have some form of universal health care and robust social safety nets. Wonder if that's why we're happier?

    Bunch of commies. :shakefist:

Why do you take these statements so personally? You're like white people when a black person brings up slavery. "I didn't own any slaves!"

Regardless of what you personally did or did not do, the fact is, boomers place a lot of blame on millenials for the economy crashing. "Lazy ass millenials - when I was your age, I worked part time and went to school and paid off college then. I didn't need no stinking loan." "Millennials are crashing the housing market cuz they aren't buying houses!" "Millennials are crashing the diamond market cuz they aren't buying diamond rings"

Like it or not, realize it or not, boomers had it fucking easy and blame millennials because they don't.

I'd need to see some data on what degrees the "most educated generation" actually has before I get too spun up. If they're in STEM and trades then we have a problem. If they're in 16th Century French Poetry or Gender Studies or some such, then it's pretty clear what's happened.

I don't. I just like posting in Anc's threads because he'll never respond. I also remember when Boomers noticed how their parents could buy a three-bedroom house in a "nice" neighborhood for $5,000 with a GI loan, and by the time the GIs I knew got out of Nam - if they did - that same house would have cost 50-100 times that.

Short answer: Every generation blames their parents' generation. Some are just less obvious than Anc.

Most of that I don't disagree. But, ..., as for millennials, it's accurate. They will be the first generation in the US (outside of the Great Depression) to have a lower standard of living than the previous generation.

Look, Anc, no one's dreamt of sending the boomers to the guillotine as much as me, but I've learned to forgive them.

Think about it, they didn't have the internet, no cellphones, only 3 channels of TV, politics was something you only thought about and talked about at the dinner table for about half hour a day, and forgot about.

If you wanted to be more informed, you could subscribe to political magazines, but the ones that told you the real truth were considered "commie subversive" and would get you on a federal watch list, and/or beaten to a pulp by your neighbors if they caught you pulling them out of the mailbox.

And if someone did beat you into moosh, the only form of life-support was iron lungs left over from the tuberculosis days.
    Survival rate was horrifyingly low.

It was an uphill battle for these poor pitiful inferior barbarian creatures just to survive.

Yes, they've destroyed every last square inch of this planet they could lay their hands on, but in the dark evil times they grew up in, they could hardly do anything else.

    :bergman:

    Weep for them.
    Weep, my friend.

True. And I'm sure Anc will hold Martin Shkreli and his ilk as accountable as does an entire generation his parents' age. :bailey:

Here's the thing. Martin Shkreli and his ilk could not have done the things they did if the population had not continued to elect and allow politicians to fuck the people in favor of business. Most of that was due to the generation prior to the boomers, yes, but, it's the Boomers who bitch at millenials and why millenials bitch back.

That's the reason for my first statement.

You may not be responsible. You may not be person causing Anc to lose sleep. But, others do, and do it constantly - so much so that I've come to hate boomers and I am a boomer. You don't have to be affected to empathise.

not true! Gen X already largely pulled that off by '95 (when we were still "slackers")...

although, we frequently don't even get included in the demographic charts, so no surprise the the mills are trying to take credit.

Someone with a 16th Century French Poetry B.A.has still gone through more education than someone without a B.A. Just because the degree isn't as economically valuable as a STEM degree doesn't mean the degree holder's education on par with someone who never went to college.

Unquestionably, the percentage of US adults with a college degree or higher has gone up over time https://www.statista.com/statistics...nment-of-college-diploma-or-higher-by-gender/ and that makes sense, given the emphasis on college education that my generation received. Also, just a small minority of these graduates fall within your French Poetry/Gender Studies category: https://educationdata.org/number-of-college-graduates
