A high school classmate heard my pleas and said he has some .44 mag jsp I can have. I'll be ready to knock them zombies off their zombie horses with mah Winchester.
I was just on Luckygunner.com, a major Internet supplier of ammunition... Yep, looks like EVERYTHING is sold out.
Even when ammunition does become available, the prices are highway robbery. $2 and higher for range ammo? Fuck the fuck off, but clearly some assholes are taking it up the ass and paying that price.
It's not like I need ammo. I have a shit-ton of it, already. And it's not like I'm able to spend a lot of time at the range these days. But, still...I'd just like to be able to get some when I want it.
I'm going to the range after work with my son tomorrow or the day after. We aren't shooting up all the ammo we have, just enough to stay proficient and spend some time together. The shelves are nothing but dust and cobwebs around here.
I bought a Ruger LCR .327 Magnum today and wanted to check on ammo for it, hence my trip to Lucky Gunner. We can't buy ammo by mail anymore unless it's shipped to an FFL, who, naturally, charges a fee; I thought I might buy enough to make that worthwhile. Alas, none in stock. S'okay. I have a little even though I haven't yet had a gun in that caliber.
Man looking at that Ruger site, that Blackhawk convertible 45Colt/45 auto is calling my name. I can't wait until the ammo shortage is over.
for my purposes it is. I don't carry (I work in a "gun free" zone) but I need a modicum of firepower for home defense and in my car within arms reach for occasional trips to areas of statistically suboptimal personal safety. I'm not a fan of excessive recoil, so a heavy gun with a lighter load than a .44 mag (for example) makes sense. That and I love single action light trigger pull accuracy. And of course Ruger is such a reliable time-tested brand as we all know. Now let's get some AMMO cranked out & delivered for the love of god! We can put a man on the MOON!
You've got all the power you need in .45 Colt/.45 ACP, and, when the apocalypse ends, .45 ACP ammo is cheap and plentiful, and you can get all sorts of great loads for it.
I saw that and somehow I didn't fully process it until I saw the cost of a whole box. But, yeah, it's kinda mathematically inevitable: $2/round = $100/box of 50 rounds.
.45 ACP in a revolver has never appealed to me due to having to fuck around with moon clips. Just one more thing to keep track of.
I got the S&W 610 revolver in 10mm last year and...yeah. Moon clips aren't that bad, but they're a significant complication for shooting. And if you bend one even a little, bitty, tiny bit...it's useless. Generally speaking, shooting automatic cartridges in revolvers is just never going to be a good idea. Exceeeeept...in single action revolvers where you don't have to deal with moon clips. Maybe.
The smallest amount I purchase at a time is usually a half case, though I buy more whole cases. It's been impossible to find any of the common calibers in anything but small, massively overpriced batches for nearly a year now.
The only way I'd pay that much per round is if it was .50 BMG and I actually owned a weapon in that caliber. $2 per round would actually be a bargain for that caliber.
If I were to buy a revolver, it'd probably be a .357 magnum so I could shoot .38 Special in it. Same with a .44 magnum with .44 Special. Is there a "lesser" .45 caliber cartridge that you could use in a revolver other than .45 ACP?
If I were a reloader I could load up super light "cowboy action shooting" loads but I'm not into that. But taking it in the other direction you can load up hotter loads that the Blackhawk can definitely handle, but then IMHO you might as well just get a .44 mag. Yes I had a couple of .357 double actions revolvers in the past, and shot .38 specials for target practice & general fun off duty. My at work load was 125 grain hollow points in .357 and yowza that was one hot load!
I keep seeing articles that ammo production is actually up, but consuming is WAY up. I wouldn't expect that to change with a VP who swears she'll do executive action on guns the second she gets a chance (and a P who's going to drop dead any second). I'd love to hit the range with my .45 just to make sure it still fucking works (it's been quite a few years), and I have a few hundred rounds in the safe - but they're Wolf brand steel rounds, and indoor ranges don't let you use that shit.
You don't use moon clips in a Blackhawk. It loads through a gate and the rounds are ejected with a push rod. So, no worries. Go to 8:40 in this vid... The .45 Colt/.45 ACP convertible or the .38/.357 regular Blackhawk is the way to go.
$2/round is about what I pay (regularly) for Hornady .500 Magnum or .45-70 LeveRevolution rounds. Of course, I don't burn up 100 of those in a session.
