I'm not outraged, I just find that particular way to refer to woman to be disgusting and immature

It's sad you don't feel the same way

Although taking you even less seriously is probably a good net result here

We've been having a reckoning of sorts about that, FWIW.

I've always remembered older black folks were the ones who were the most against gansta rap in the 90s and white kids being the ones buying up the shit on Death Row's label.

Meanwhile, I had to learn from Anc that Tupac was an activist and that he was trained in a number of classical arts.

So not only are you digging a deeper hole by standing by your misogyny, you're actually insulting me for having an issue with the disrespectful nature of it towards women (which is an entirely reasonable stance)

    Wow. You seriously have issues

Usually the people complaining about the violence and sexism in hip hop are happy to turn a blind eye to the violence and sexism in other musical genres, which makes their criticism suspect. :async:

I don’t know about you, but my dislike of hip hop has nothing to do with the lyrics other than the melody in which they are sung.

I'm fairly certain his comment was aimed for old fogies like Oldfella who *only* complain of rap music and no other genre.

That being said, the current country scene is 80 percent dudes singing about their fancy ass F-250 they banged some chicks and I find that as boring and dull a topic as the singing about fancy ass Bentleys the rappers were banging chicks in 10 years ago before wyp*p* stole our ideas AGAIN.

Meh, as a classically trained musician, I wish mainstream audiences would better appreciate older genres, but as much as I'm not terribly fond of hip hop and modern pop, to blindly be critical of them would be doing music a disfavor as a whole and not encourage it to organically develop as it has. I'd rather lambast particular pieces for particular elements that hold back a song (such as one using the electric guitar to sound like a kazoo), and find elements (the background counterpoint, usually) that strengthen the piece.

I can remember a sociologist pointing out that hip-hop culture was just laying bare regular American culture without sugar-coating it. I thought that they were nuts when they said it, but in the years since, I've realized that they were right.

Not too long ago, I read a piece by a music critic who was complaining that gone are the days where you had a band that was directly in control of not only their image but also the sound of the music that they put out. He longed for the days when you had bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin who put serious work into their music as well as their image. He said that there was only one band today that he knew of who had as much control over their careers and the kind of music that they put out as did the various big-name acts from the 60s to the 80s. He gave a link to the band and I gave their music a listen. It was hot garbage. And not in a good way. Their stuff was a lump of pre-programmed shit so that you not only knew what notes were coming next, but you also knew what instruments they'd be played on. It was like listening to a drum machine play a click track, with no hope of getting a Neal Pert solo at any point.

I mean, we can agree that pop music might not be "high art," but at least some of the artists are trying to do something different with either the music and/or the lyrics. And there's a number of rap artists out there that I'd really like to be able to pick their noggins because they're clearly doing stuff that's echoing work by some of the best classical composers. I don't know if they figured it out on their own, or if they're giving a nod to their inspiration, and I'd like to find out.

Hell, look at Heavy Metal. It's been taking a hard look at Classical and saying, yeah, I can not only do that and will, but Ima iterate on it for my original material.

Do I only complain about rap music? Have I ever complained about it? :waiting: I don't care for it but I don't care for some other types of music either. 90 percent of the time I listen to jazz. White people never did figure out a way to steal that.

One genre I can't get into is classical. Ten seconds in and I'm thinking "get to the point! Are they going someplace with this fucking song or what?" It has no swing, no groove, and way too many people playing the same instruments at the same time.

Well, yeah. There's generally a strong spoken-word component to the lyrics, but lyrics are often sung as well, and even in a song with entirely spoken lyrics, it's not like it's a capella.

that's not jazz. Jazz is Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, and Dexter Gordon, just for a few examples.

Oh please. Any free thinking human being can read that and get the point she was making. There was nothing anti-sematic about it. Only a hardcore far leftist would hate it because it had the virtue of being true. Nothing to apologize for there.
