I've been thinking that since alternative energy sources on are everyone's mind of late, that it might be nice to have a thread dedicated to the topic. I don't know that there's enough news to make it monthly, but keeping the topic in one dedicated thread (or one dedicated thread a month) would make it easier to update the topic when a bit of new news comes around, or someone is trying to find the information via search. So with that in mind:

2014 is the year that Tesla Motors will launch its third vehicle, the Tesla Model X, a family-oriented luxury SUV that already has thousands of reservations on the books. At a recent London conference, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that the Model X will only be available with a dual-motor all-wheel drive system, and will carry a slightly-higher price than the Model S.

Pee powered robot gets an upgrade.

Fully autonomous robots that collect human urine to power themselves could be a step closer, according to researchers in Bristol.

The engineers from the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) have created a pump based on a human heart that can deliver urine to the fuel cells of the waste-powered “EcoBot”, without the risk of mechanical failures and blockages experienced by current technology.

This could enable the robots to operate without human intervention because they it would allow them to collect their own fuel and use it to generate electricity, the researchers claim.

You know, I can see this as being a great thing for bars. Plenty of urine available to generate power, if they're able to generate enough power to start selling it back into the grid, they could give patrons credits for discounts on drinks!

VW to build 250+ MPG diesel hybrid.

Volkswagen knocked one out of the park with its genre-defying, extreme MGP XL1 supercar- with orders exceeding the company’s XL1 production plans for the slinky exotic car, despite its six-figure price tag. Don’t think that the XL1 is done because VW doesn’t plan on building more XL1s, though. Meet the Volkswagen’s XL1 follow-up act: the 250+ MPG Volkswagen Twin Up! diesel hybrid set to debut later this month at the LA Auto Show.

The Twin Up! uses a modified version of the XL1′s 47 hp, 800 cc diesel engine and electric hybrid drivetrain to return a claimed fuel consumption of more than 256 MPG and CO2 emissions of just 27 g/km on the European cycles (if that g/km measurement didn’t give it away). That’s pretty strong, considering the 900 lb. weight penalty the Twin Up! has over the featherweight XL1.

Peugeot to build air powered hybrid car.

Built on Peugeot’s popular 208 platform, the Air-Hybrid system was co-developed by Bosch and features a hydraulic pump that pushes air into the engine in place of gasoline. This pump keeps the engine going without any additional fuel required, and the electronically-controlled system can also alternate between air and gasoline. This unique take on air-powered cars has huge potential, so long as costs are kept under control.

It will be interesting to see if they can actually pull it off. There's an ex-Formula 1 engineer who's tried to build something similar, but he's never brought his to market in over 10 years of promising that it'll be ready "next year."

Austin city government goes all renewable.

Earlier this month the city of Austin, Texas made a big green move. The municipal government transitioned all its buildings — from libraries to fire stations — to 100 percent renewable energy, making it the largest local government to be powered completely by renewables.

The city will subscribe to about 400 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy through Austin Energy’s GreenChoice renewable energy program. Nearly all of the energy will be produced at a wind farm in West Texas.

The Better Place electric car company is well and truly dead.

Just two years ago, Shai Agassi’s innovative battery-swapping electric automaker/infrastructure builder Project Better Place was valued at around $2 billion. But this past May the company filed for bankruptcy as sales for their special Renault-built, battery-swappable EVs failed to materialize. This week an Israeli businessman bought Project Better Place for just $450,000, a sad final footnote in this ambitious but flawed company.

I remember when the company was announced, a lot of people were all excited about it, but I couldn't help but think that the concept was pretty flawed. Elon Musk supposedly looked into buying the company, but obviously decided against it.

So Brazilian company RAR Energia has something called a gravity motor. Supposedly there's one up and running in Brazil, and they're building another one in Illinois, which my brother is part of the team working on.

Thoughts? I have to say I'm skeptical, especially since one of their documents claims that the thing can generate electricity "without heat." I'm far from an engineer, but I do have a passing familiarity with the basic laws of physics. I mean come on.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, they could have meant that the machine doesn't use heat to generate electricity, not that no heat is generated in the process of generating electricity. That would make a bit more sense.

I'm dubious about that as well. I've posted the link to it on a board where many of the members are engineers who work for the electrical generation industry (they help design power plants of various types) and will report back anything they have to say.

Study claims that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles equipped with supercapacitors are more efficient than any other design.

An evaluation of different fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle (FCHEV) powertrain designs—such as fuel cell/supercapacitor (FC/SC), fuel cell/battery (FC/B), and a combination of supercapacitors and batteries (FC/SC/B)—and different control strategies by researchers in Belgium concluded that the FC/SC HEV has slightly higher fuel economy than the FC/B HEV and FC/B/SC HEV powertrains.

This, the researchers suggested in a paper presented at the recent EVS 27 conference in Barcelona, was due to the use of the efficient supercapacitors for the majority of the transient-power requirements (the SC can be charged or discharged at a high current, at which the battery cannot function). The fuel economy of the supercapacitor fuel cell hybrid, they noted, is higher despite the vehicle being heavier and more expensive.

They also pointed out that the combination of supercapacitors and batteries (FC/B/SC HEV) may provide a good solution for FCHEVs from the point of view of battery lifespan, component sizing and transient periods.

Warren Buffet’s utility company, MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co, announced yesterday that it had placed a massive order for 448 wind turbines, worth $1 billion. The turbines, which will be installed in Iowa, represent the largest order to date for a land-based wind energy project.

All "free energy" devices (i.e. energy out without any detectable energy of any form going in) are bullshit. Many are deliberate hoaxes, scams and frauds. Others are the results of well meaning individuals or groups failing to take account of all factors, not realizing there is some kind of obscure (and undoubtedly inefficient) energy input, and the thing won't work without that, etc. The RAR Energia guys are bit more industrious with their hoax than most by the looks of things - but it's still just as much bullshit.

IMHO the only alternate energy techs that really make sense for massive-scale deployment for the powering of basically everything worldwide, are solar and nuclear. Solar power for 90+% of everything, and nuclear power for things that require high density low physical footprint power in one place, independent of grid connections.

This is strictly using currently developed tech of course. Fusion if perfected could supplant both nuclear fission power and solar power in the future.

Air powered Lego car.

An air-powered car built of Lego, that can reach a top speed of around 20km/h (12mph) has hit the roads of Melbourne.

It was built by an Australian entrepreneur and a Romanian technologist who used more than 500,000 pieces of Lego to complete the car.

The crowd-funded project began with a tweet asking people to invest in an "awesome" start-up.

Four air-powered engines and 256 pistons, all built of Lego bricks, enable the car to move.

From algae to crude in oil in an hour!

Engineers have created a continuous chemical process that produces useful crude oil minutes after they pour in harvested algae — a verdant green paste with the consistency of pea soup.

The research by engineers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory was reported recently in the journal Algal Research. A biofuels company, Utah-based Genifuel Corp., has licensed the technology and is working with an industrial partner to build a pilot plant using the technology.

In the PNNL process, a slurry of wet algae is pumped into the front end of a chemical reactor. Once the system is up and running, out comes crude oil in less than an hour, along with water and a byproduct stream of material containing phosphorus that can be recycled to grow more algae.

With additional conventional refining, the crude algae oil is converted into aviation fuel, gasoline or diesel fuel. And the waste water is processed further, yielding burnable gas and substances like potassium and nitrogen, which, along with the cleansed water, can also be recycled to grow more algae.

Not only did California double the amount of solar power generated in the state last year, but the increase was greater than in the previous 30 years. Combined.

As 2013 came to a close, California announced its total rooftop solar capacity had doubled in just one year. The state boasted 1,000 MW of accrued rooftop solar capacity, demonstrating that solar energy is not only in demand, but also affordable. At this rate, Solar Industry Magazine notes that California’s rooftop solar capacity will grow to 5,000 MW by 2014, which would blast through the Million Solar Roofs Initiative that aims to install 3,000 MW by 2016.

When Afganistan ends, instead of redirecting the billions then not being spent on war into social programs and vote buying, they should fund the construction of massive massive solar farms in desert areas where direct strong sunlight is almost constant (and has the added bonus of no local residents around to start NIMBY bitching).

They should also fast track the development of thorium plants and high temperature low pressure molten salt reactors. Much more efficient and safer than current pressurised water designs.

Solar power just hit the big time in the US -- BrightSource Energy has confirmed that the world's largest solar thermal plant, the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in California, is up and running. The array, also backed by Google and NRG Energy, produces a total 392MW of power through 173,500 multi-mirror units. That's enough to power 140,000 nearby homes, and it represents 30 percent of all the solar thermal energy in the US.

THE largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere will be built on the Yorke Peninsula after being given the green light by the State Government.

The $1.5 billion Ceres project will be developed across 18,000ha near Black Point, and will be capable of generating 600MW of electricity through 197 turbines, or enough to power 225,000 South Australian homes.

German turbine manufacturer Senvion will commence development later this year, creating up to 500 jobs during construction and 50 full-time maintenance and service jobs during the 25-year life of the project.

The wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2016.

Charge Rage hits Silicon Valley companies that don't have enough spots for employees who drive EVs.

A few years ago, employers in Silicon Valley and beyond thought they were being progressive by installing a dozen or more EV charging stations for the handful of electric car owners in their ranks. These days though, some companies are facing the problem of too many electric car drivers and not enough electric car chargers, leading to incidents of “charge rage” at the workplace.

The Mercury News highlights the issue at places like German software engineering firm SAP, which installed 16 EV chargers at its Palo Alto campus in 2010 for its 1,800 employees. While just a few drove electric cars back then, in 2013 there are now some 61 EV drivers employed by SAP, and these drivers aren’t exactly getting along as well as you’d hope.

Tesla SUV delayed again.

While Tesla has been on a seemingly-unstoppable roll, designing the Tesla Model X has proven “damn hard”, delaying the all-electric SUV for another year. With production now pushed back until 2015, one has to wonder what sorts of difficulties the Tesla design team is running into.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Elon Musk said that it’s “damn hard to make SUV…that is beautiful yet incredibly functional at the same time.” I wonder how much of the design woes center on what Musk called falcon-wing doors or the all-wheel drive system? It also answers the question of why the Tesla Model X wasn’t on display at the Detroit Auto Show this year, though there are other issues keeping the electric SUV from production.

Tesla still losing money, despite increased revenue.

Using Generally Accepted Accounting Practices, or GAAP, Tesla posted a loss of $16 million on revenue of $615 million, though all that money didn’t come from Model S sales. Tesla has lucrative powertrain deals with both Daimler and Toyota, as well as clean credit sales that helped their total revenues rise to more than $2 billion in 2013, though going forward Tesla has even greater ambitions.

In a much-anticipated quarterly report, Tesla Motors reported that in the fourth quarter the electric automaker saw revenue of more than $600 million. Not only that, but Tesla is making more money than expected per car, with a gross profit margin of more than 25% for each Tesla Model S sold. Very wow.

By the end of the fourth-quarter of 2013, which ended on December 31st, 2013, Tesla sold 6,892 Model S sedans, beating even its own internal estimates. Furthermore, the gross profit margin on each Model S sold rose to 25.8% for per vehicle. This means buyers are still opting for profit-padding options like the rear jump seats and higher-performance models.

Just over half of Cadillac dealers will carry the Caddy plug-in hybrid.

Many Cadillac dealers across America have decided against carrying the 2014 Cadillac ELR on their lots. It’s another blow to the image of Cadillac’s first attempt at a plug-in hybrid, though it stands to reason that some areas might scoff at the idea of a hybrid Caddy coupe.

Cadillac told Edmunds that 410 of its 940, or about 56% of dealers in America will not carry the Cadillac ELR on its launch. Most of those dealers are located in ares where Cadillac sales are low-volume, or the local populace has yet to open their minds to the idea of a $75,995 plug-in hybrid based on the Chevy Volt. US Navy tests seawater fuel in RC plane.

It's been almost a year and a half since we first reported on the U.S. Navy's plans to produce cheap liquid fuel from seawater. And as a proof of concept, the unmodified two-stoke engine in this P-51 Mustang remote control model plane was recently powered using the new liquid fuel instead of traditional gas.

The new type of fuel—known as a liquid hydrocarbon—is created by extracting both carbon dioxide and hydrogen from regular old seawater, and then re-combining them using a proprietary gas-to-liquid process.

Supertrees Make Singapore Look Like A Giant Garden From the Future

But these aren’t ordinary trees; they’re “supertrees” — ranging in height from 8 to 16 stories tall — that aren’t natural at all. That’s not to say they aren’t “green,” for they collect and generate solar power, collect rainwater, and act as ventilation ducts for plant conservatories beneath them, according to CNN.

As utilitarian as this all sounds, these mechanical trees are quite aesthetically striking, and are part of an ecotourism initiative of the southeast Asian city-state, which combines form with ecologically-friendly function in a grand way. The massive 250-acre landscaping effort will host flora from all over the world in environments they can sustain life in, supported by the electricity generated by the supertrees’ solar panels.

Solar cells just hit 44% efficiency levels.

Engineers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a new type of solar cell that uses multiple junctions instead of single subcells to gather the full spectrum of light. The panels are able to capture different wavelengths of sunlight, so they can achieve power conversion efficiencies of 44% as compared to the 29% of standard panels.

Like, wow, man, my phone uses weed for a battery!

The waste fibres from hemp crops can be transformed into high-performance energy storage devices, scientists say.

They "cooked" cannabis bark into carbon nanosheets and built supercapacitors "on a par with or better than graphene" - the industry gold standard.

Electric cars and power tools could harness this hemp technology, the US researchers say.

They presented their work at the American Chemical Society meeting in San Francisco.

IBM shows off radio telescope shaped solar collectors which can produce pure water while generating energy.

IBM Research and Swiss solar technology company Airlight Energy just unveiled a cutting-edge solar system that resembles a 10-meter-high sunflower! The High Concentration PhotoVoltaic Thermal (HCPVT) system can concentrate the sun’s radiation 2,000 times and convert 80 percent of it into useful energy, generating up to 12 kilowatts of electrical power and 20 kilowatts of heat on a sunny day—enough to power several average homes. Oh, and it can also produce clean, fresh water as a result of the process used to cool the solar cells!

A sneak peak at Toyota's 2015 model fuel cell car.

Toyota knows that in order for fuel cell technology to take off, it needs to be affordable. To this end, they’ve managed to cut the cost of fuel cell powertrains and fuel tanks by a full 95%. Pricing has yet to be announced for the FCV, although Toyota hinted that it will cost more than a Prius but less than a Tesla.
