The stock market is crying "Bubble!" when it comes to 3D printers.
Reminds me of the early days of the internet when a bunch of tech companies had slightly off years and people were declaring the internet dead. Or maybe its closer to the early '80s when PCs were starting to be more common, and the real tech bubble wouldn't happen for another couple of decades.

High performance bicycle company uses 3D printed parts to shave weight off their designs.
That, as they say, was only the beginning.

Near the end of this episode of MacBreak Weekly, tech writer Andy Ihnatko talks about going to a local museum, taking pics of a statue of Lincoln by Daniel Chester French, and discovering just how easy it was to upload them to the web where they were processed in such a manner as to make it easy to 3D print a replica of the statue. As Andy makes clear, he had no intention of doing this when he took the pictures, but only thought about it when he got home and started fiddling with the applications. He used 123D Catch Online and 123D Make Online to do it. (I am totally going through all my pictures of Tuckers this weekend to see if I've got enough to come up with something!)

Man makes a prosthetic finger with custom tips.
There's a scene in the movie The Machinist where Bale's character is talking to a guy named Ivan who had his thumb replaced with one of his big toes. Ivan described it as making things difficult to walk, "but the ladies love it!" I'm wondering if Call doesn't say something similar about his new prosthetic.

Play-Doh is coming out with a 3Doodler style 3D printer.
Group estimates that 3D printing will result in $100 billion dollars a year worth of intellectual property theft by 2018.
Of course, this raises all kinds of questions as to what constitutes IP theft. If, for example, I use a 3D printer to make a new handle for a knife, because my only option would be to throw that knife away and buy a new one, have I committed IP theft? (Would it be IP theft if I glued the handle back together instead of printing out a new one?) Did they use the same kind of "accounting" that the music industry uses, where one illegally downloaded track is worth something like $2,500, even though it sells for $.99 on iTunes?

Inspired by the open source nature of the 3D printer movement, a group has come up with an open source automatic loom that can be partially 3D printed.

3D Printed Cast Speeds Bone Recovery Using Ultrasound
    April 28, 2014 | by Stephen Luntz

Photo credit: A' Design Awards. Ultrasound could be the killer app that makes 3D printed casts take off
A new prototype brings together 3D printing, room to breathe and ultrasound pulses to create a cast that is not only comfortable and stylish to wear but is expected to speed healing relative to existing options.

Designer Deniz Karasahin has adopted the idea of using Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound, (LIPUS) to speed bone regrowth. Pulses of sound waves too high frequency to hear have been shown to increase the incorporation of calcium ions in cultures of cartilage and bone cells, as well as increasing the expression of genes known to assist in healing.

However, despite success in vitro and promising results from clinical studies LIPUS has not been widely adopted, partly because the measured benefit has varied across trials, in some cases appearing too small to justify the effort.

LIPUS currently involves a daily session at a medical clinic, but Deniz Karasahin added a portable ultrasound generator to this cast. "For single 20 minute daily sessions this system promises to reduce the healing process up to 38% and increase the heal rate up to 80% in non-union fractures," he has claimed, using figures from the top of the ranges produced in trials of LIPUS without changing cast technology.

Operating LIPUS with conventional plaster or fiberglass casts is tricky however, since probes need to be attached directly to the skin, requiring a break in the cast. The Cortex exoskeletal cast offers a way to eliminate that problem. The brain child of New Zealand designer Jake Evill, the 3D printed cast has several benefits. Besides being lightweight it would allow air to ventilate, the owner to scratch an itch on the affected limb and avoid the common smelliness of casts. Karasahin realized it provides plenty of opportunity for LIPUS probes to access the skin, and took it to the next level.

In both Evill's original and the Karasahin extension, dubbed the Osteoid Cast, an X-Ray and 3D scanner map the area that needs to be supported and a cast is designed and printed. The lattice is made in two halves and snapped together. The holes are made smaller around the injury site to increase support, but are still large enough to allow probe to be threaded through.

Costs are still unknown, but likely to fall as 3D printing becomes more widespread.

Okay, I'm going lead with my "big guns." If you don't find this amazing, just go ahead skip the rest of the post. Company unveils mind blowingly awesome 3D printed chess set.

There's more pictures at the link, and having done injection molding work, CNC work, and lost wax casting, there's no other way chess pieces with that kind of detail could be done by anything other than 3D printing. You could get close with some of those methods, but the cost per piece would be an order of magnitude or more higher. The fine detail on them is utterly amazing.

Doctors implant 3D printed vertebra in 12 year old boy.
20+ years ago, a friend of mine was in a car wreck and it fractured one of his vertebrae in such a manner that the doctors missed it on the initial X-ray. By the time they discovered it, there was nothing that they could do to repair it. He spent the next several years in considerable pain before committing suicide. I have to wonder if this technology had been around when he was alive, if it could have helped him.

First 3d printer in space launches next friday. Here is the experiment description. I know, Tuckerfan already posted about this, but I think it's so cool, you can't have enough links about 3D printing in space:
    http://spaceindustrynews.com/nasa-to-use-3d-printer-in-space-to-build-spacecraft-and-satellites/

The national acedemies press has a free PDF about 3D printing in space: http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=18871

And NBC has a short video as well : http://www.nbcnews.com/science/spac...er-could-revolutionize-final-frontier-n199726

So yeah.. it's going to take 'a while', but building large structures in space, instead of delivering components from Earth, should become a possibility. I hope ;)
