Ladies and gentlemen, the real trailer is up.

I've made no secret of my dislike of Abrams' work, but I'll be first to say that this does look good.

Oh, and how much does anyone want to bet

Yeah, that's definitely left me wanting more, which probably wasn't a difficult task in this case. The aesthetic is very original trilogy.

Can anyone identify whose voice is used in the voiceover? And is it the same one both times?

    Sounded like Cumberbatch.

As much as I generally dislike shakeycam (even virtual shakeycam), I really dig it when used for some shots of ships in space. That bit with the Falcon is :j:.

Honestly? Meh. Neither perfectly nostalgic, which would have been one way to go, nor an innovative take on the aesthetics. This says "There's a new Star Wars movie coming up.", which is fair enough, but everybody knew that; it would have been the chance to say something more about its style. This doesn't.

Its JJ Abrams. His teaser trailers are generally enigmatic jumbles of light and shadow with noise, by comparison, this trailer is a freakin' spoiler! Had he done his normal style, it'd have been nothing but lightsabre noises and the cloaked figure.

I did see that, maybe I should have spoilered? I want to know his story.

It is. It's Andy Serkis (not Cumberbatch as everyone thinks).

What kind of comment are you looking for? Please don't say it has anything to do with Jango Fett and the Clone Troopers, or I'll revoke your geek license.

Also, that "black stormtrooper" is played by John Boyega, who is one of the main actors in the film. So despite @Tuckerfan's speculation I doubt he's a "red shirt".

My first reaction was "An unmasked stormtrooper?"

My guess is an inside spy or someone that joins the heroes by the end.

He's "the black guy" in the film, and he's got that "Oh shit! I'm gonna get killed!" look on his face, which can only mean one thing: He's going to get killed. That's how it works in Hollywood. :dendroica:

I imagine that its a bit of a nod to the original, where Luke and Han dress up as stormtroopers. Presumably, someone will look at him and make a "Aren't you a little short/tall to be a stormtrooper?" comment at some point.

Between your post and mburtonk's, I don't know why anyone would think racism is still pervasive in the United States. :whacko:

Hey, ask Anna. She'll tell you that what I'm saying isn't outside the realm of possibility at all. Its a "thing" in American movies like this: The black guy in the film is either comedic relief or he's going to get killed. There are a few exceptions, of course, but Abrams isn't the kind of filmmaker I'd expect to have the level of sophistication to be the exception. This guy ain't Samuel L. Jackson or Billy Dee Williams (and even as a little kid watching ESB in the theater, I could tell that Billy Dee was in the film because Lucas had someone point out to him that the previous film was nothing but a bunch of whities), so he can be killed off in this film.

Rumors I've read long before this trailer suggest the black stormtrooper dude might actually be the new protagonist.

Tuckerfan is exactly right. Since the black Canadian population is considerably smaller and most of Canada's race issues were against your indigenous people, I'm not surprise you and probably other Canucks haven't picked up on it.

We don't really know, and I'm not going to accept any rumor as anything other than a possibility. If John Boyega is to be this generations "Luke Skywalker," then my hat's off to Abrams, because I can't think of any filmmaker willing to do such a thing. I can see him being in all three movies (as well as a spin off film or two), but hanging a franchise like Star Wars on someone from a minority demographic right out of the gate is a pretty ballsy move. Let's not forget that the reactions here weren't exactly thrilled when we saw who was going to be playing Johnny Storm.
