Anyone watch part one of this on scifi?

The twist really has me intrigued, not as much for what it is, it's that it was revealed at the end of part 1 of a 3 part mini-series.

Hasn't appeared on iTunes yet. I'll probably see it tomorrow.

Based on your spoiler how does that explain some of the stuff we saw in the commercials?

There are two trailers, neither shows much about the actual show. The second trailer is the most accurate. Hell, they completely changed the look of the ship from the upfront trailer. It's too bad, I liked the Saturn 5 with the extra infrastructure. The first part was just getting all the pieces on the table, and setting up all the politicking and in fighting on the ship, the some stuff back on earth and...

The little girl who knows things aren't right on the ship.

This is the part I dislike, I hate the "special child" trope that is massively overused in sci fi.

I hate that trope too. Unless the kid has been genetically engineered, they shouldn't be "special" in sci-fi except perhaps for some mad computer skills. It reminds me of a very good slam on Star Wars that argued that it wasn't even science fiction, it was just a retelling of the old "this is why the royal family is in charge" genre of mythology, where everyone who wasn't "special" by blood was just an expendable spear carrier.

I'm withdrawing my support of this show.

Looks like the whole thing is Ascension is a controlled breeding project trying to create the Kwisatz Haderach or something.

So just another scifi show ruined by magical child(ren).

I fucking hate kids on TV and wish sci fi and TV in general would learn that not everyone thinks kids are special and precious.

    Stray Thoughts:

If it's supposed to be an Orion vessel, I'd think the constant bang-bang-bang of nukes going off would be a feature, felt in the hull and decks. If it's absent, its absence should be noticed. Since they're clearly experiencing gravity, it means the ship is supposed to be under power and accelerating.

The computers are way too 80s to be 60s. Digital LED timers on the bombs? No.

There's no reason to be out of touch with Earth. The ship is sublight - what, maybe 5% C if that? And only 2 light years away. There's no reason they shouldn't be communicating news back and forth. So what if it takes 2 years or so to get there?

That was pretty much the first thing I noticed about the tech looking way to modern to be 1963.

The other stuff I don't worry about too much, I'm not watching a documentary on the specifics of Orion propulsion, but I do wish they had at least paid lip service to the gravity issue.

IIRC, the Orion (and there were tiny prototypes tested with conventional explosive) it would've have been "bang-bang-bang" from the nuclear detonations any more than most cars go "bang-bang-bang" due a a series of detonations in the cylinders.

Because of the massive "shock absorbing assembly" between the detonations and the rest of the ship, the explosions would be smoothed out into steady acceleration.

At any rate, the "gravity issue" is so irresolvable in science fiction productions that I pay little attention to it.

But hey, look at it this way, this show is another excuse Tricia Hefler to take her clothes off.

less than thrilled after one episode. pretty production design but way too inconsistent with the technology. even assuming they used the best the early 60s had to offer it seems too modern.

i hate it when a show gets the clothes off every too-beautiful cast member in the first three seconds. not that i'm a prude but usually this is done to keep the 13 year old boys interested. in turn meaning i probably won't be. but kudos to 40 year old tricia helfer - 27 years on the target audience and still able to dominate their wet dreams

i don't mind the child. nothing supernatural about her. it's no wonder somebody would feel watched. an illusion like this can't be so perfect no one would notice... something.

anyway... whatever comes in the next two installments can't be half as interesting as colonizing a new world would be. too bad...

... but yea, well. will likely finish it.

I recorded it, but after reading some reviews and comments by friends on Facebook, I deleted it without watching it.

I did find fascinating the guy on the outside (whose father started the program) inferring that the purpose of the program was for the people aboard ship to be an "unaware think tank". Forced to come up with technological advances thanks to being in "deep space".

It's a ripoff of Wool by Hugh Howey.

Seriously I hope he's getting royalties.

Oh well, after watching all three parts I'll have to sue SyFy for that time. Jee-bus, really? Good idea, obviously a half decent budget and that's what they can come up with? Should have read something instead of just staying in front of the telly :(

To their half-defense: obviously this was meant as a six-parter. Seems like they lacked confidence in this so they cut it back to three. I wonder what landed on the cutting room floor. Many loose ends I gather...

Avoid and watch SHARKNADO instead. This one doesn't pretend, at least.

It actually was a six-parter, they just showed them 2 at a time.

So the whole project was designed to breed Carrie to telekenetically maroon black people on an alien planet? You can tell it was dreamed up before the civil rights movement.

The ending was so unspeakably bad I don't even know where to begin. So I won't. Sharks with lasers would have made more sense.

I barely had time to register the final scene before they suddenly cut to a jarringly noisy promo for another series.

I finally saw part 3...ummm yeah...

The general consensus on IMDb seems to be that there is some sort of alien artifact on the ship, since the magic seemed to be triggered by Crista but originate from the pool. So something is in/under the pool. Also, it's theorized that they needed to breed someone to interface with the object mentally.

Apparently there is some select dialogue that does imply there is still a lot more to the story. Comments from Enzmann about "they are going into space" and some of the specific ways he referred to Crista. You also now have Stokes on the outside being hunted by killer blogger.

So at first glance, part 3 was pretty bad, but I do think it setup some interesting things that they could follow up on if it goes to series. I just wish they would jettison about 75% of the personal drama on the ship.

    And poor Gault...stranded on Vulcan.

oh that wasn't it? i thought this was just the mini and that's it. a LOT of things would make sense if this became a series!
