The CSS Hunley has been almost completely cleaned of gunk and researchers may soon announce why it sank. http://www.foxnews.com/science/2015...ederate-submarine-slowly-reveals-its-secrets/ If you look at the photos at the link, you'll see the conning tower is missing a hunk out of it. I watched a documentary which laid out a pretty convincing case that this was caused by a lucky shot from a soldier on the ship the Hunley attacked and that is what led to the sinking.
