Granted this seems to be legal in Toronto but it is still fucked up. Tax payer subsidized public housing projects in Toronto are able to declare that only members of a certain ethnic or religious group may inhabit that building. A 21 year old disabled white Canadian man (he is paraplegic and in a wheel chair) has been rejected from being allowed a place in tax payer funded public housing because the residents of the building have declared only muslims may live in the tax payer funded building. Supposedly, there are also Christian only buildings and some for other religions but I, for one, would be royally pissed if my tax money was going to such discriminator groups.
Yeah that wouldn't fly in the land of the free. Fair Housing Act among other things. But how is this different from your tax money going to Christian only private schools through vouchers?
Toronto City Council is chock full of socialists and left-leaning morons, and has been for decades. We did have a conservative mayor at one point, but he smoked crack. This is what you get.
Public funds should never go towards anything associated with religion. I can't tell you have much I despise that the fact that we have state funded faith schools.
It wouldn't fly here, either. Given that it's publicly-funded housing, a constitutional challenge or Human Rights Commission complaint would shred this practice in an instant. But that depends on whether the prospective tenant has the temerity or time to actually launch such challenges. Again, these are policies implemented by a left-leaning council with its head up its own arse. In America, a right-wing federal government gave you the USA PATRIOT Act... which pretty much goes to prove that any government which clings to an extreme side of the political spectrum is going to cause all kinds of stupidity.
So... Can neo-Nazis declare a whites only tax payer funded public housing building? I ask because this seems like where this fucked up crazy train is heading.
But how is this different from your tax money going to Christian only private schools through vouchers?[/quote] As long as: (1) the school meets the necessary academic standards (2) no one is forced into a Christian private school (3) the money only funds educational/non-religious activities It's not at all the same thing. No one is coerced and public funds are not used for religious purposes. A similar thing would be the government setting up a school that was only open to Christians.
Except they don't meet any objective academic standards and several states have even refused to issue academic standards because they know the religious schools would not meet them.
Okay, so the Muslims built the place themselves, and the government gives them a subsidy in exchange for some of the units being reserved for low income types. Not exactly what you were claiming, was it?
