I've never understood what the point of the "Facepalm" negative reputation icon nor do I understand why so many posters here like to use it for some reason.

It seems like at least half (or more) of the negative reputation icons are the facepalm.

It's meant to convey exasperation as well as feeling embarrassed for the person to whom it's given.

This is one of the recursive zen threads, where a question is posed that also happens to be an answer to the question.

It really just needs some 'meta' elements, and we then can just shut down the whole internet, go home and drink ourselves to death at the stark horror of existence.

You've received 1,663 facepalms. In comparison, you've received 1,878 disagree ratings and 2,267 dumb ratings.

You've also given out 37 facepalms, so you must have had some idea what you were trying to convey.

Yes, I think we've grasped that fact. The question is: Why have these things AT ALL??

The board I just leapt from after 13 years as it sank beneath the waves had a "like" function and that was it. It's shorthand for "I agree and won't take up space repeating what this poster has said."

If one does not agree, one can effing well post to explain why. One can also express exasperation, embarrassment and a whole range of other feelings in an effective counter-punch.

These one-click negative symbols are for lazy dingbats who can't be bothered to make an argument.

(Though I had to laugh at all the facepalms in response to the OP.)

Well that puts it in a new light for me. Because "exasperation" itself is not strictly a negative rep.

That's generally the purpose. I do occasionally want to use it to express exasperation with something the poster is mocking. Sort of an agreement facepalm, indicating, holy shit, I can't believe this either! But I never do it, because I don't want the meaning misconstrued.

There is actually a chance that it was a genuine question on Dayton's part.

Eh, I can see the point behind it. There's no need to form a thoughtful reply just to disagree every time volpone calls someone a faggot or nigger. He doesn't deserve to be engaged while acting like a child, yet as a noob, you could see that the vast majority of the folks here disagree with those kinds of insults.

I am in the minority I think, but my preference was the system with just agree or disagree, where you could add your own comment/smilies to the reputation. :faisent:

    Theoretically.

I would say that anyone who does that should shoot soonest onto everybody's Ignore List. There's no point in formulating a thoughtful reply to someone that far gone, unless it's a zinger for the amusement of the others. But that can't be achieved via a One-Click Wonder.

Meantime, I see that a certain member has gone through this thread and facepalmed every post (except its own post). VERY FUNNY.

Well, I'm waiting, Faceman, how long will it take you to facepalm this post? Yep, ahm a-countin'.

The Cliff Notes version of this is, a long time ago we once had rep points that had positive and negative points. When we came over to Xenforo from vBulletin, we lost the ability to comment within the rep, and this was the best solution John and co. came up with.

I actually like the various options.

I may see a post I don't agree with, but find funny. So, yeah, click 'funny' rather then waste monitor real estate with a quote and a 'ha-ha, jolly good show' or somesuch.

I may wish to profess gratitude, so clicking 'thank you' is a bit more efficient than an effusive thank you.

And Dayton may decide to go tilt at a particular windmill again, in which case the facepalm button beats yet another Daytonification of a thread, or where the board says the exact same shit to him as the last umpteen times.

Visual shortcuts have been a fact of human communication since forever, so I'd actually like to see more. A flapping vagina would be the perfect response to some of the posts by one of our more luminous, thread-necromongering members for example :garamet:

Roger that, ecky, ahm a-workin' on it this minute.

But wait a sec. Wouldn't that be a flagrant anglicism? Cuz the Brits use the term "cunt" as an all-round insult whereas the rest of the anglophone world doesn't. And that's where you're coming from, right?

yeah... give it a while here with some of our more obtuse regulars. Facepalm reactions are more efficient than 15 posts all saying a variation on "the stupid: it burns".

No. The words 'luminous' and 'thread-necromongering' will clue in regular viewers to Wordforge as to whom I'm referring to it, safe to say it's not you, and the flapping vagina refers to the queef-level of posts he provides to the board.

Now if we could a sandy flapping vagina for when Volpone comes back...

    somewhat, but taht's the catch.

posts deserving of  aren't made to stimulate debate, but to get a reaction through passive aggressive trolling.
if they're worth an actual response, they get one. If not, well...

I'll just support what others are saying.

There are times when I read posts, that aren't necessarily trolling, but are just plain cringeworthy, that I can't bring myself to respond to in any details (sometimes perhaps because I am looking at the board on my phone) so a quick "facepalm" is a lot easier, especially when some of Dayton's more ridiculous remarks are concerned.

    Feel free.

The rest of us have been here for the last fifteen years (or longer, if one includes the time at Trek BBS, from which this spun off from) and there's little to be added with shaming Dayton.
