The Democrats fucked it up so bad that Trump got a higher popular vote, the presidency, and both congress and the senate. The election was presented as an opportunity to show how out of line with mainstream America Trump is, and it showed that no, this is who half the USA actually is. Complain about mandates and percentages all you want, but the Republicans aren't gonna be listening, and the American left getting caught in its bubble of that kind of thing helped lead to them reading the room this badly in the first place.
Trying to tell the truth and run a fact-based campaign to a voting populace that prefers bumper sticker slogans that feed their rage, make them comfortable with their bigotry and makes them feel good about their stupidity is obviously a losing strategy.
Co-signing Mike. Dems are trapped trying to be a fact-based party in a post-fact culture. The side that believes in reality is always deeply handicapped when opposing the side who suffers no such handicap. The challenge for Dems is that over the last 45 years, the right has applied all their efforts to robbing U.S. culture from any mooring to reality and there's no obvious solution to that problem. The only way that changes, IMO, without a similar generation-long effort (which will be vastly more difficult in the face of the opposition already having seized the advantage) is if the reality-challenged culture lives through some profound suffering - a Great Depression level suffering. Maybe at that point the artifice of lies they have lived in will fail them.
What fucked it up most was Biden refusing to run one term like he sweetie he would. If the Dems had been able to run a real primary, things might have been different. I doubt Harris would have made it through a primary. But it's true that Dems and left leaders need to stop worrying about margins and mandates and whatnot. They need to focus instead on how they recover from their massive fumble. They can start by not continuing to coddle CEOs (Yeah, I'm looking at you Hochul)

That would be good except many Democrats are also beholden to these CEOs, they enjoy their lot in capitalism, and won't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
They were discussing on "The World" tonight something I've heard reported elsewhere at length - the Democrats actually OVER-performed when considered in the context of all the post-covid-disruption elections which have uniformly broke against incumbent parties in every case, without much correlation to ideology, in many cases significantly. That trend would have predicted a much bigger loss. I'm not sure when they begin this period of which they're speaking.
So the problem is not a single electoral defeat, or even a party facing a string of them. It is the problem of how to fundamentally transform our politics. Realistically, any possible solutions must be developed and advanced within, and around, the Democratic Party. This. It initially looked like Trump and the GOP had an overwhelming success in voter turnout, but the more we hear about the counts, the more it seems the supposedly overwhelming mandate for Trump is now a hair's breadth win. Even people who disliked the Harris campaign's bewildering need to act like Dick Cheney was their friend ended up voting for her because Trump and Project 2025 scared people shitless (rightfully so).
I admit, I did start posting here more after meeting UA. At the time, we lived more than 500 miles apart and while we texted and communicated in other ways, it was also nice to come here and converse/discuss topical issues as well. There was also couple on Trekbbs that also met through that message board. I believe in their case, both were from Europe, but lived in different countries - probably the same distance apart. Anyway, both had an increase in posting at the beginning of their relationship as well. I can’t see why that would be something so unusual, so … outside the norm of human existance, that you should call it out. Please elaborate on the point of this post.
