That's a shame. I understand. Linux is making progress in leaps and bounds, but it has some time to go before just anyone can adopt it and use it without issue. I don't mind the small challenges here and there, but most folks just want something that works out of the box without thinking about it, and Linux can't quite reach that yet because so much software is written with only Windows in mind, and while the devs behind the various Linux distros find new ways to make things better, that's a difficult obstacle to overcome.

Oh, I think it might just have been killed.

Windows AI feature that screenshots everything labeled a security ‘disaster’

Knowing Microsoft, they'll just bury it in the code and keep it functioning. It's like when they promised to remove keylogging, and just kept on doing it even if you disabled it. At the end of the day, all of this is for data scraping and selling, it's the meat and potatoes of Microsoft's home user income. Just recently, they blocked the ability to make local accounts. They want that data:

Well, I guess MS must have cut Thurrott a check, because if you skip to about the 35-minute mark, he admits to all the security issues people have raised and says, without the slightest drop of sarcasm in his voice, "It's Microsoft. They listen to customer feedback, and they'll fix it." Paul, have you met Microsoft? You don't even have to go back too many episodes to hear you bitching about how they don't fix things!

This is starting to feel a lot like the lead-up to Windows 8, where millions, if not billions, of people were telling MS, "We don't want this shit. It looks ugly." and they foisted it upon people anyway, only to be shocked that folks weren't interested in it.

I love that they say that, like they said the keylogger built into the Windows 10 beta wouldn't be there when it was released, and it was most certainly in there and still logging data.
What they'll do is wait a while until things die down, and enable it in the next update.

again I have the question. Is this home or pro version of windows?

I guess I am cynical, but if you are using windows home you are asking for it IMO. Yes, I am victim blaming, but you are a fucking idiot trusting obvious unscrupulous people with your secure information. I would like the world to be a bunch of honest actors, but it is not even close and it won't be in our lifetime.

So if you are a fucking tech moron, maybe we should be making you very afraid of told like windows which make you overly open to exploitation. You are in contact with the world on a machine you keep your banking and personal information on. You are publishing your personal details to a world full of criminals including kidnappers, theives, rapists, and chomos. That is not to mention channers, trolls, lolcows, and crazy fucking bloggers.

That being said, of course windows is going to monitor home users shit because they can.

What I am wondering is whether or not this shit happens on win pro because that is where I would figure some companies would flip the fuck out and stop using windows all together if windows pushed Recall onto their user base. A program like that would make corporate espionage a fucking easy thing and though they might use it to monitor workers, it would have to be able to be secured within the enterprise before they would allow it.

I am thinking windows is not going to push an open activity logger like that without allowing it to be secure.

What I will say as a person who does know a good deal about how windows does work, the probability is that users of the home version do not have the security capabilities to keep it private because windows puts that level of security on the higher tier product of pro.

It is important when you are talking about windows to differentiate between pro and home, or to let people know this is a problem with both.

Because it's not an improvement on the experience. Microsoft's just shoving shit down people's throats and are upset that it's not going well for them. They're so used to just being the only game in town (in the grand scheme of things). This happened with Windows XP, too when Microsoft tried to get people to move to Vista. There was no need. XP was addressing what people needed. It was also stable, flexible, and wasn't dialing home with siphoned user data.

And, once again, Microsoft fucks the privacy pooch. Ask yourself, if you haven't already, what use Recall actually has that is worth this level of privacy invasion.

Microsoft Recall screenshots credit cards and Social Security numbers, even with the "sensitive information" filter enabled

They're like so many technobros (and sis's?) they are quite good when it comes to coding and shit. But when it comes to actually, y'know, communicating they're not worth a flying fuck. Ever since XP Windows has been "good enough", but they keep shoving out new versions, without any clue of how to convince the tech muggles (like me) what the advantages of the new versions are. I mean as a user if you ask me what I want from an OS, I want it to be reliable, easy to learn (I don't ever want to hear the words "intuitive" and/or "user friendly" when it comes to software) and updatable at need. What I get with each new version is a raft of features that I don't want and don't need and for explanation I hear a stream of technobabble that would embarrass the writer's room of Star Trek. :brood:

Don't you want AI to write your own words for you and hallucinate wildly while making you sound like you've been off your meds for six weeks? Isn't that something you want?

The Better Offline podcast makes a good point that the reason we're being subjected to all kinds of shitty tech products is that nobody in the industry has had a legitimate idea since the original iPhone was released.

This isn't to say that tech hasn't progressed, but just that it's all been an incremental improvement over what's come before. Not bad, but when your shareholders expect exponential growth, bugfixes aren't enough. You've got to have something that's tremendously huge. You know an AI program that I'd be excited about? One that recognizes that my phone is my pocket and doesn't respond to touches on the screen. But that won't inspire large shareholders and it isn't as sexy sounding as your plastic pal that's fun to be with, even though it is 1000% more useful in your everyday life than an AI that tells you to put glue on your pizza.

Oh, get this: Microsoft reportedly does not use Recall internally. The claim is that they're not using it as they haven't swapped out all their machines to ones that can run it. Sounds plausible until you remember that in various lawsuits against big tech firms, the discovery process has turned up emails and text messages from management saying, "We need to discuss this in person or on the phone because we don't want this stuff to show up in court if we get sued." So I'm thinking that the real reason they don't want it on their systems is because they know that even if there's no incriminating texts or emails, there will be incriminating operations being captured by Recall.

I have one PC that's still on Windows 10 (everything else is either running MacOS or Linux) that I keep around for the odd things that I can't do in MacOS (mainly because I haven't taken the time) and tonight when I logged into it I was greeted with a MS ad. Several of them, in fact. Looks like I'm going to be flipping that machine to Linux as soon as I can get one program that I need to run under WINE.

Good move. Honestly, I don't know how many people are even tolerating Windows anymore. I say this as someone who, from 1990 to 2015, was an ardent Windows defender. Sure, Microsoft made mistakes, and Bill Gates was a dirtbag, but Windows itself was a solid OS most of the time. It's like they can't help but shoot themselves in the foot every way possible at this point.

In my case, I do have one remaining system on Windows, and it's a mini-PC that handles my Plex server. I haven't figured out how to properly mount my external drive (the 8TB drive that holds all of my movies and TV shows) so that Plex reads it without permissions issues. Once I have that nailed down, the house will be completely Microsoft free.

Microsoft has crammed that garbage so deep into the OS that it actively affects stable business software like Citrix, and yet they keep doing it. They're either tone deaf or they're used to getting their way to the point where they simply don't care. I remember when Microsoft Bob came out and bombed. For a while, MS learned, but they've long since forgotten those lessons.
