Yes but the key is that they are not "naturally navigable". Like the Amazon that lots of people died going up, the region is too tropical.

    Not quite:

Although for the purposes of this thought experiment it's largely irrelevant anyway since central Australia is an entirely different environment to the North American great plains. There aren't any crops being grown out there even if there was easier transport:

I just noticed your nation is shaped like a Rhinocerous. That can't be good!

Latitudinally, Australia's too far north to have a comparable climate to the states, unfortunately. If it were even further north (neverminding the islands to the north being in the way), it'd take on a jungle environs. Shift it to the south toward the 45° line and it'd be fine, though the proximity to Antarctica would cause some interesting scenarios.

At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it?-- Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never!--All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

    Not looking great.

However we’ve botched an attempt at suicide before.

In fact twenty three years later the man who gave that speech would become president and then lead us out of one of those attempts. Before getting his brains blown out in a theater.

Also, while a Ken Burns paraphrase you might like this version:
