But if we were truly put together a reasoned thesis on the historical and sociological similarites of Islamic patriarachy, with that of its closest Western counterparts -- well, in that case, Islamic patriarchy would have most in common with Western conservatives. Is that really what people want to discover....that patriarchical Islam, in terms of their attitude and approach toward women, is more relatively like American conservatives (vs, for instance, American liberals)?? Given the major makeup of this board, I would't think so...

Also, another thing to note: these types of stories can be found to some extent wherever you look. That's what makes the extrapolation to Well, Islam has the numbers for this type of influence so disturbing. I'm reminded of a story I read a while ago, about a 9 year old girl in Brazil who was excommunicated by the Catholic Church because an abortion was performed on her after she was 'allegedly' sexually abused by her stepfather and became pregnant with twins. Sexual abuse, horrific as it is, notwithstanding, a 9 year old is hardly able to carry twins. There were clear, mitigating biological factors to consider. But, the Catholic Church decides the child is not a good Christian. The child-rapist on the other hand, remained a 'good' Catholic, according to the Vatican.

The Catholic Church's behavior in that instance? If you're honest, then it's also detestable.

Not to mention, every year, 500,000 Christian young women die in childbirth, mostly because they have no choice, no contraception, no access to reproductive medicine, in large part because of the dictates of the Catholic Church.

Is this then indicative of the Catholic Church as a whole? Are all Catholics, about all 1.something billion of them, horrible?

It boasts resorts like the Burj Al Arab, and Dubai in particular is building itself up like the Vegas of Middle East. The OP article itself suggests that that drinking and other sinful activities are encouraged at these locations, and yet the government continues to enforce draconian Sharia laws. There’s a clear conflict between the UAE's capitalism and conservative culture. Last year two British nationals were jailed just for kissing in public. This kind of shit makes me never want to visit that country.

I've been to Islamic countries, even the UAE, and while it is certainly different than being in the US....saying it should be the last option for a Western Woman is a bit absurd.

It's also slightly different imo than saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans."
