You're gonna be seeing everything that's in the fire fighting arsenal over the next few days. The people flying those things tread a fine line between heroism and insanity. :calli:

it's a pretty wild thing to watch in action. It doesn't need to land to refill.

I don't know if they've brought this bad boy out yet. Conditions may be too extreme at the moment. I'd fly with the Hurricane Hunters before I'd fly with these guys. :shep:

That's amazing! That strikes me as almost a desperation tactic when lives and/or structures are in immediate danger. It's simply not possible to put enough water out there to do anything other than spot relief with these kinds of giant fires. The goal is to use natural (rivers primarily) and man made (highways) barriers combined with fire retardant to set borders. Once you start getting containment you can employ some sort of strategy when it comes to which areas to protect. Naturally they want to protect lives and structures before uninhabited areas. The problem is when you've got hurricane force winds blowing embers around those barriers are more symbolic than anything. If the winds calm down we'll start seeing some progress right now, it's a holding action at best. I have family in Orange County to the south and they're safe from this firestorm. There's no guarantee that something couldn't break out down there. :spock:A number of celebrities have apparently lost their homes are in danger of that. One of the finest narrators in the audiobook realm Simon Vance has lost his house and recording studio. I'm sure we're going to hear more of these kinds of stories.

I am deeply annoyed about the attention to the rich that have lost their coastal LA homes and the tears wept at the coast side mansions on PCHs that have been torched all the while entire neighborhoods of normal working people have been destroyed in the LA foothills in the Eaton fire. So sorry James Woods and Denise Crosby and the dozens of other ultra rich who had to evacuate their coastal enclave. You’ll be fine. You don’t even need insurance. What about the other equally bad fires and their victims who just won’t be?

I don't think we should downplay the heartbreak that comes with losing your home simply because someone is (comparatively) rich and/or famous. They may be able to replace their material possessions more easily than the rest of us, but losing family treasures such as photographs, critical documents, pets and the knowledge that they will never be able to regain the magic of their original home sucks for everyone.

I didn't say we should feel sorry for them. I do think gloating over their loss is pretty shitty. YMMV

I explained what was happening to my son, that a lot of wealthy famous people like Paris Hilton and Mel Gibson were losing their homes (or one of them at least) and his only response was "Gee, that's too bad" in as sarcastic a tone as I've ever heard from him.
People who have multiple multimillion dollar homes don't really require much sympathy, in my opinion. I do feel bad for Denise Crosby because it sounds like that might be her one and only home (certainly she doesn't come across as an ultra wealthy asshole when I see her on the Trek cruise) but I feel no pity for the ones who just lost A home.

    Nuances:
I feel bad for people who have lost everything and don't have the means to rebuild.
I don't feel bad for rich people who lost A home, but I'm not going to celebrate it either.
My sister lives in a ritzy neighborhood and has a second home in Palm Springs. I'd have a hard time with anyone dismissing those losses if they hit her. She has money and lives a good life and earned it honestly as a single mom starting in 70s.
I am hoping Mar A Largo gets fucking demolished in a hurricane, although I do hope that the illegal aliens employed/exploited there are able to get away safely.
