Sub-genres that are only popular for a few years, if that, are common. The weird thing about nu-metal is that when it faded, all rock music faded from the mainstream, never to return. It sucks, but luckily things like Pandora and Spotify came along so it's easy to just listen to whatever, doesn't matter if it's popular.
