Some people say how they feel, and others keep it hidden.

What are you like? If you truly love someone, do you just tell them, no matter how awkward it may be or make you sound?

When someone dies, I often hear the words from the surviving friends and relatives say their only regret is that they didn't tell them how much they loved them or meant to them. And now they can't.

Is it better to wear your heart on your sleeve, and risk getting rejected and scorned, or hold back your feelings, never letting them know how you feel?

I've heard of people regretting their decision not to tell someone, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they regret saying it. Still, I think it's something you should weigh carefully before you say it.

Say what you feel. You could die tomorrow, and if you're in love, she'd have wanted to know that, regardless as to whether or not it was requited.

She could die tomorrow, and you'll kick yourself for the rest of your life for not taking the time to say it.

Maybe waiting causes you to blow your chance.

Worst case - you find out for sure, one way or another. If it's meant to be, you go on for there. If it's not, it'll probably sting a bit, but better to know so you can move on. No use in spinning your wheels.

Life's just too short to hold back.

Eh, telling someone you love them. :storm: This is a bit like plotting precise coordinates on the bridge of a ship. You either hit the mark, or you hit another mark believing to be someplace else only to be sent running the other way in tears. I "used" to be like that. Now, I try to stay somewhat enigmatic with my feelings until the other person is forced to ask the question. Then I play coy, let the drawbridge down a little, and say "what do you mean/trying to say, exactly?"

For the record though, MOST people can "pick up" your feelings toward them once you've been around them long enough. Whether or not they choose to act, has alot to do with their feelings, or their approach. And vice-versa: for instance, most of the bastards I work with know damned well I wouldn't piss on them if they caught fire. But that's just me, if you want to treat me like shit, expect the same in return. Yeah, my workplace is HAPPY wonderworld. The only two people I can really talk to are the two managers, out of our 10 person team. The rest of them are too self absorbed in competing with each other over their commission earnings like they're openly comparing cock sizes or something. WTF. You don't tell people what you make, unless they are an intimate element in your life.

Such an act would be extremely life-threatening and, of course, most unsanitary.

Really? Were Kais' false prophets?? I don't remember that bit in DS9, though it has been a while since I have watched.

At first I thought you meant a sort of "Do you fall in love easily?" question. To that I was gonna say "when I was 16." but that question is entirely different.

I definitely try and articulate how I feel to my close friends. I always tell them I love them, but I make sure that it's appropriate for our friendship. So long as I know that they understand exactly what I mean, then I tell them. If I feel nothing, I won't tell you I do. But for me it works both ways. While I try and articulate my love often, I also let people know when they piss me off. I used to be very shy and timid about that, but I've discovered that there's no reason to be. Usually when I express my dislike or frustration towards someone, they're too shocked to say much back.

Emotional displays -- sincere ones, that is -- are leashes. One should be judicious in handing anyone that kind of leash. And some emotional displays should only be given if they're genuine. So to answer the question, no, I don't "wear my heart on my sleeve".

although, I will say that I have said it when I legitimately thought that I did love the person. Only to look back and realize that my concept of love has grown so much that my concept of love then is nowhere near my concept now so I don't feel like I ever did love them.

    Does that make sense?

I think it's healthy to vent to friends, especially if they are good friends. You don't want it to build up to a point where you loathe them and secretly want them to die before you tell them you are pissed at them.

One of my best friends does that. One of her friends will piss her off, then do it again, then again, and then suddenly, she will blow up, betray them, say nasty things and end the friendship in a great, sometimes public spectacle. And a lot of times, the other person will be completely shocked that she was harboring that much ill will for so long. (Crazy Asian gangsta chicks, damn!)

The reason she does that, simply, is because she hates confrontations, and would rather let it sit there and stew. She finds it easier to just put it aside than to work up the courage to tell them.

My chick friends, I will tell them that I love them without a problem. And they will know that it means I love them the way I love a family member, not that I desire to stick it in their colon and masturbate furiously to their Facebook pictures. I've never had a guy friend I love that way, and I sometimes wonder about why that is.

Where it got complicated once was when she was a friend who I also loved deeply. Surprisingly, this wasn't a chick I thought about banging all the time, but I still had very strong feelings for her. I never told her how much I loved her, and years later, I am wondering if I should've.

I think our concept of love grows as we grow as individuals. When I was but a baby, sucking on my mother's titty, I loved mom because she fed me and changed me when I shit myself, and she took care of all my needs.

When I was a teenager, I felt I loved a girl because she made my pee pee feel all funny, and when I fantasized about her, my loins felt all hot and well used after I jerked off while thinking of her.

As an adult, we know this isn't the be all and end all of love. (Even though she still makes my pee pee feel funny and warm at night.) It becomes more profound and has a deeper meaning.

So yeah, what you say makes sense. Someone you thought you loved, you look back on, and realize the love you loved them with back then was a shallower love than you love someone with now.

It's not that your feelings of how much you loved them changed, but that you learn to love with a more evolved sense of love.

I used to hold back a lot, but considering the insane asylum I live/work on, fuck that shit. I'm so sick of self-righteous, hypocritical fuckstains who'll have no career once the Navy boots them out telling me about myself when even most of their "friends" admit they could use a good, hard check in the mirror.

Just generally speaking, I'm not very demonstrative about my feelings. Certainly I'm not loudly so. Partly for others' sake (politeness and all that), partly for my own sake (I might change my mind about something later and that would be embarrassing), partly because that's the way I am. But the more certain I am, the louder I'm likely to be when the subject comes up. ;)

I'm more of a doer than a sayer, most of the time. I don't flat-out tell my wife "I love you" very often. But I hug her and smile at her and bring interesting stuff to her attention and just generally show my happiness about being around her, and she knows what that means.

I don't have feelings. Feelings are what women have. They come from their ovaries.

I always took the phrase to mean "openly displaying how one feels about someone else", not necessarily telling them outright.

Based on my interpretation, then Yes, I do wear my heart on my sleeve. I'm usually pretty transparent with regard to that kind of stuff. Don't have much of a Poker Face, or whatever. My actions and expressions pretty much give me away every time.

But if you're actually talking about telling someone outright how I feel about them, then No, I don't fit that definition of it.
