No. She emptied her coin purse into his bowl as a gesture of kindness, forgetting that she had her diamond ring in the coin purse because it wasn't comfortable to wear it. When she returned the next day and asked him if he had it he gave it back. So instead of giving him all the coins she had on him, she gave him all the bills she had on her. Apparently, that wasn't the end of the story, though, which is good.
Evidently she had taken the ring off because of a rash and put the ring in her change purse in her wallet. A couple days later she had forgotten she had done that, and when she gave Harris some change to help him out she opened her wallet's change purse and dropped all of her change into the cup, including the ring.
Rashes are sometimes linked to faux gold. It would be amusing if this guy got a 100 grand for giving back a fake ring. At least, for everyone but her fiance.
Let that be a lesson. If you want to keep your jewelry, stop perpetuating the homeless situation by giving money.
Wouldn't the person who gave him the money owe gift tax? If that's the case he shouldn't owe anything because that would be double taxing the money.
It is was here in France, he wouldn't owe anything in taxes. Personal gifts, that are not earned income, are not taxable here.
How would he go about filing taxes if he doesn't have a home address? And how would the IRS track him? Does he have a Social Security number?
