Tuskegee airmen shot down over the Reich got chucked into Stalag Luft with the whites and were treated with the same level of respect as the white POWs by their captors. But when they got off the boat back to America at the end of the war, they were suddenly niggers again. This and the OP aren't supposed to be an excuse for the Nazis or Hitler, but go right ahaead playing it as such if it makes you feel good.

Next, I address your second clause: Now here's where I explain why people might nevertheless have fond feelings for one of these assholes. Nowhere did I mention what I thought personally of Roosevelt, because it has nothing to do with the point you were making, or that I was affirming. Perhaps you think the part where I mention winning a war, saving a country, or creating a treasured program refers to FDR, but it was actually generic, and could easily have referred to Eisenhower, Lincoln, and Johnson, just as examples. The point being, the men might be assholes, but they don't always fail at the job. Now mind you, plenty were assholes and incompetent, but that's another topic.
Germans in general treated American POW's "by the book" and fair. They were pretty much the polar opposite of the Japanese when it came to treating POW's. Of course they had their limits, and they outright executed a shitload after "The Great Escape" but that type of behavior toward captured military was not common. Jew civilians on the other hand? Not a happy time to say the least.
