So.... We're at most 24-36 hours from a massive power outage that may or may not include us and may or may not last a week or more. We are largely unprepared for the cold (we can handle food and water until the roads are passable again). I'm not generally a pessimist about crap-shoot odds like this but I'm low key terrified on this one. If the whole system shifts 80-100 miles south of the forecast we'd be in the snow band and electricity would be less at risk. People to our south appear to be well and truly fucked - and eventually to our east. Fine time to be locked out of Facebook but if the power goes we'll soon be cut off from everything.
In Michigan, the forecast is "Maybe there'll be a snowstorm, maybe it'll just snow, like, a regular amount. Maybe it won't snow at all." Guess I'll find out in 24-36 hours?
I wish I was there. I miss the winters we had on the Keweenaw Peninsula back in the 70s. In France, we don't have real winters. Just a chilly, rainy season with an occasional sprinkling of snow that disappears within a day.
This makes me feel less bad about the last 24 hours. We had part of our electrical switchboard fail, meaning we've been without power in the house for 24 hours in the middle of a summer heatwave. Got to 42C (107F) today and is forecast for 45C (113F) on Monday. On the upside though now it's reconnected the combination of AC and nighttime has quickly made things comfortable, would be much worse dealing with an ice storm! Hope it doesn't hit you too hard.
currently -20 C here being beside the lake doesn't help expecting 15-30cm of snow tomorrow when it "warms up" to -15
Windchill was nearly -40 at one point yesterday. Honestly didn't feel that bad for the most part, but I wasn't standing around any longer than it took the dogs to do their business and get back inside. My car got a new battery out of it though.
I’ll take snow and ice over living in god’s waiting room. Besides, in a couple years your whole state will be underwater.
Yep! They're forecasting 9 to 12+ inches here in our part of Ohio. I've got canned goods in the cabinet in case we lose power, and I have flashlights and everything else charged up and ready. That said, if the power does go, I'm most concerned about our pipes. We live in the outermost apartment and so our water lines are prone to freezing. I have cabinet doors open to let warm air in, but if the power fails that will go quickly. Other than that, I'm just going to hunker down and wait it out a few days. I'll live on canned chili and Star Trek books, and I'll be just fine.
He's got a pretty big head. https://www.instagram.com/p/CfXYhXWrGEz/ Looks like he's lost some weight since that Instagram post.
His head looks less bobblehead in that picture, it was very distracting. At first I thought he might have been AI created.
God... I hate Florida. Outlook is getting better for where I live. Earlier it was showing ice and snow with temps in the low 30's. Now it's showing rain with temps in the mid 30's to low 50's. Went to a couple stores to pick up mostly non food items. People wiped out the milk, bread, eggs, and toilet paper again. Earlier I was a bit worried mainly about the ice knocking out power. If it does go out we'll have to figure out how to move some food around. Last time the power went out, I lost power for a few hours, my sister half the day, my mom's power was out for three - four days. That time the power went out due to a heavy line of thunder storms that went through.
The only time I've been to Florida was for a March 2007 business trip to St. Petersburg. It was cold as fuck. I had to buy warmer clothes than what I'd brought with me.
Yeah. That was weird one. I was down there too. Visiting my mom. I brought shorts, jeans, tshirts, I wound up buying a few sweatshirts.
It's been just below freezing (with no chance of ice because the possibility of rain decided to fuck off a fortnight ago) with highs in the low to mid-40's here. I'm sure @Ancalagon had the same, while @Mirah might have had some snow.
It started sleeting here a little while ago and it's expected to last until about 3am. It won't melt by the time I have to go to work in the morning, but I can get to my job using surface streets.
I live in an area with a large Latino population, on my way home from work last night, I stopped off at the grocery store to get a few things in case I didn't feel like getting out in the bad weather (I live a couple of blocks away from Waffle House, so no worries about not being able to get anything to eat) and noticed that there was plenty of food in the Latino section of the store. There was also plenty of the good Italian food, and the various other ethnic foods that they carry. Meanwhile, there wasn't shit for milk, white bread, or ground beef.
