I think it's a corollary with Dunning-Kruger. They can't imagine themselves being the Nazis in the tale about the evil Nazis. They will literally tell scientists who have spent decades working on the study of it that climate change isn't real, they'll tell gay people that being gay is a choice despite the massive scientific evidence that says otherwise, they will absolutely deny deny deny like Peter and then be like "who me?" when called on it. They're genuinely bad people, but they can't conceive of the notion that they, a humble, God fearing person, could possibly be evil or wrong about EVERYTHING and to such a degree. Like every cultist, they see themselves as the only remaining remnant of sanity and decency and, like every cultist, their enemies are both overwhelmingly powerful and also completely weak. Biden forced experimental drugs on people and colluded with private companies to silence people, the very definition of fascism and leftforge stayed silent through all of that.
