All the more reason to be prepared.

Cultures that celebrate violence and a judicial system that does not adequately hold them accountable. Next you will dust off the old "you incarcerate the most people" chestnut, and I will again repeat that it does not matter how manu you lock up if you're not locking up the right people and LEAVING them there.[/quote]

Prepared? More like the cause, not the cure.

And yes, American culture in general-not just your dogwhistle- celebrates violence without holding people accountable. Along with the implication of "locking up the right people".

Unfortunately, that has always been true, and has also been the case in every culture. What has happened lately in the USA has only allowed it to be manifested more blatantly than it used to be.

Actually, the US originally intended to end that sort of institution. But, then they stupidly thought Adam Smith’s thoughts on economics would be a good idea, and all that went out the fucking window.

Self-serving assumption to justify depriving the individual of choice. Right out of the authoritarian playbook.

What implication? That violent people would be unable to repeat their crime?
    :waiting:

Nah. It's gonna be "you're racist for not tolerating violence! "

It is my sincere hope and prayer that no one blows Mamdani's head off.

That would be a tragedy of the first order.

Please, God, do not let that happen.

You want someone to actually do it?

Nor are their legions of lunatics screaming that requiring people to get driver's licenses and have plates on their cars is the worst kind of tyranny imaginable.

    Cars are the tyranny.
I never got the joy out of them that Americans are supposed to have.
I wasn't proud when I learned to drive.
I wasn't proud when I got my license.
    I never enjoy driving.
The slightest bit of traffic sends me into boiling ulcer brewing disgust.
Even when I'm all alone, and have a good song on the radio, I'm always deeply aware I'm inside a hurtling projectile that could randomly decide to bust off a bolt, fling off a chunk of itself, and send me careening into a tree.
The whole car experience has been a 33 year long joyless drudge
Whatever good feelings it was all supposed to give me passed me by, and they're never coming back.
Like the fucker on the interstate who passes you going 100.
    Gone forever.
    Gone forever.
    Gone.
    Forever.

I like driving. In the days of $1.25/gallon gas, I used to take a Sunday afternoon and just drive around the Iowa/Illinois/Missouri border region, finding random small towns along the Mississippi to explore.

Driving is also the only time I can really listen to things like podcasts, because the fact that I can't get distracted by second-screening makes it possible to actually absorb them. And I enjoy the alone time.

It probably doesn't help that my next door neighbor's granddaughter was squished by a drunk driver.
And three of my classmates were squished distracted driving.
And 75% of my cats were run over.
And my parents ran over a dog when my mother was in labor for me, so my arrival on this planet was bathed in the blood of animal sacrifice by car.

Not to mention having to renew those licences periodically, or having them temporarily or permanently revoked for even relatively minor infractions such as repeatedly speeding even if it didn't cause any harm to anyone, or the provision that you are not allowed to operate them after consuming alcohol.

Because there is no concerted agenda, with repeated historical precedent, of creeping steadily towards the outright ban of cars.

    No, that's not it.
I go from point A to point B, accomplish what I'm supposed to at point B, then go back to point A glad that the task at point B is over with.
I don't pat myself on the back, and expect a medal.
The thing at point B just needed doing. Like taking out the trash.
You don't get up on a high horse about taking out the damned trash. Just shut up and do it.
Too much high horse riding in America. A disease. A filthy one. It's how you get Trump.
