I wish Southern Maine could split off from the rest of this craphole state. Golden can eat a bag of dicks.
Not sure where the cutoff is but when my brother lived in Boston my family all went up to Bar Harbor a couple times while visiting. Aside from Cadillac Mountain Stout being one of the few beers I’ve ever walked away from I really enjoyed the town. Bit of a cliche but coastal Maine really does have some great lobster. And Acadia is just fucking amazing. The Thunder Hole is up there with Old Faithful.
Acadia is the most beautiful place I've ever been, and I've been to Alaska, the Grand Canyon, Tierra del Fuego, and Antarctica. Downeast Maine is the only place in the world where the little switch in my brain clicks over into "you're home." Bar Harbor, on the other hand, is too touristy for my tastes. And yes, the lobster is just . . .
Reports that Schumer told his caucus that the GOP do not have the Senate votes to pass the House CR. Senator Whitehouse says he'll be speaking about it shortly on the Senate floor. Suggests the House CR is dead, with Senate Dems focusing on a 30 day short-term CR. Per NBC's Frank Thorp, Senator Van Hollen (D-MD): “At least for now, I don't see the votes, based on my, my reading of the end of the meeting, I don't see the votes there right now for passing their House Republican CR” https://bsky.app/profile/peark.es/post/3lk7bpumi222a
Schumer on Senate floor: "Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort, but Republicans chose a partisan path" "Because of that Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR. Our caucus is unified" on the month-long CR https://bsky.app/profile/burgessev.bsky.social/post/3lk7dwsvljk2w
I'm of the camp that Trump and Musk want a shutdown. We'd be playing into their hands giving them one. From the horse's mouth: Chuck Schumer: Trump and Musk Would Love a Shutdown. We Must Not Give Them One. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/13/....gbPa.hibxOqAMC45s&smid=nytcore-android-share
The GOP has blamed the shutdown crises on Democrats every time. Let's not be their scapegoat. Also this would enable Trump and Musk to fire people and end programs more easily than if government remains funded.
I guess the determining factor for me would be, what would it do to the federal courts? Would the cases against Trump be paused until the government is funded again?
I don't know, but it would make it more difficult if defendants are OOO due to shutdowns. The answer is yes, the Federal court system is affected by shutdowns directly. https://judicialstudies.duke.edu/20...nt-shutdown-impacts-courts-access-to-justice/
Okay, then I'll change my tune. I'd rather the government stays open, to fight Trump in court. Which, really, is the defense Schumer should be using.
Trying not to get my hopes up but it is gonna be close either way and cloture might fail: https://bsky.app/profile/peark.es/post/3lke4jwenrc2w
Updating this as comments and with news from Punchbowl's Max Cohen that Rosen is a NO on cloture. Without a public reversal from NO to YES, Schumer now needs five of the remaining seven (or possibly four if Rand Paul flips). Durbin King Cortez Masto Klobuchar Schatz Hirono Wyden https://bsky.app/profile/peark.es/post/3lke4rerrm22w
Wyden is a NO on cloture Dem YES Schumer Fetterman Cortez Masto Gillibrand Dem not sures Durbin King Klobuchar Schatz Hirono Shaheen* *added back after a quote saying she's still deciding Assuming Rand Paul stays NO, Schumer needs three of the remaining YES. All eyes to Hawaii... https://bsky.app/profile/peark.es/post/3lke7ml5gus2w Is Schatz willing to stab Schumer in the front for a chance at leadership?
Scoop from me and @joshkovensky.bsky.social: Sen Murray asked for amendment vote on her month long CR to be pulled down, per source familiar. At this point a certain to fail + Murray didn’t want a show vote that wouldn’t change the outcome for the GOP CR. https://bsky.app/profile/kateriga.bsky.social/post/3lkebxy576c2o Fuck yeah Murray. Now no one can claim they only voted for cloture so they could vote for Murray’s clean CR (which was always gonna fail at this point).
That’s actually pretty bold from Murray. It’s one thing to be a loud NO on cloture but she is denying leadership even the fig leaf of a futile vote.
My concern is that if the government shuts down, it might not ever reopen given what has been going on in the last few months.
A legit concern but they are already shutting it down. At some point Dems have to push back. If not now, when?
I am not surprised. The Democrats will absolutely rush to give the Republicans everything they need to squeeze them out.
Donald Trump: "Give me everything I want and the ability to deny you anything you want or it's your fault the government shuts down." Too Many Democrats: "That doesn't seem right, but maybe it will work out?" Chuck Schumer: "Yes sir, right away sir, here's our votes sir." Too Many Democrats: "Yeah, sure, okay." Donald Trump: "Thanks, Chuck, that took courage. You're still a Palestinian."
First they came for the socialists, and Chuck Schumer was like "I find your views abhorrent, and I've already voted for Donald Trump's new 'let's kidnap people I don't like' bill." Then they came for me, and Chuck Schumer was like "I could really use your help, chip in $30 to help the Democrats win in November."
