https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/24/politics/anonymous-donor-military-pay-shutdown Do I need to explain why this a bad idea?
Patty Murray: https://bsky.app/profile/murray.senate.gov/post/3m3xtcryge22v Dems seem pretty united on this so far.
Except health care costs are not doubling or tripling. Insurance subsidies added to the ACA during covid will expire and those with Obamacare will pay about 30% more in premiums. Our healthcare sucks, but this is not the hill to die on.
It's already almost unmanageable as is. 30% is a massive increase. There's no logical reason to let those subsidies expire.
Shutting down the government to extend temporary Obamacare subsidies isn't worth it. If I'm paying $300/month for ACA insurance it's going up to $400/month without the extra subsidy. We're doing the GOP hustle for them.
Buried deep in most of the stories about this: the fact that $130 million is approximately one-third of one day's pay per active-duty servicemember.
Some yes, but a fraction of a percentage point that are broken by medical care costs with insurance and lack of any insurance coverage. We should be calling for expansion of Medicare and Medicaid, not inadequate subsidies of partial coverage by private companies. And not harming government workers and those who rely on their services.
It’s more important to play partisan games and grandstand and virtue signal. It’s how you fit in with the cool kids.
While i agree in principle, we can focus on expanding medicare and medicaid without cutting those subsidies. There's no reason to cut them. None. And right now, the cost of health care is getting more attention now than in the last year at least.
The Democrats wrote the expiration into the bill. They knew they would expire and could have extended them before Trump and the new Congress came in, but they didn’t. They had president auto pen too.
Cool lyrics, but you don't need to be a historian to remember how just a couple of years ago you were all in favour of government shutdowns to play partisan games and grandstand and virtue signal.
I seem to recall several of the "cool kids" at my high school drove drunk quite a bit, and a few even got DUIs. So yeah maybe he is one of the cool kids at his school.
It’s gotten so quiet in here that when FF stumbles into a table and an empty beer bottle falls to the floor it seems to ring out for minutes.
How did the Democrats amass so much power in so little time? Last year I heard they were going to be in exile for decades to come.
i was mistaken FF your NOT full of shit right now because you have shat upon yourself once again. empty bottles??? yes if it is ff they will all be empty.
Again you need to be more specific when referring to auto pen. Multiple presidents have used it over the years. Which one?
The mechanism by which they were passed did not allow the credits to last any longer. Here's a cogent explanation of why the Republican talking points that you're obediently parroting are, as usual, dishonest bullshit: Hey! Did you guys know that congressional Democrats have psychic powers? It’s true, at least according to Newsmax host Carl Higbie and Dr. Robert Malone, anti-vaxx vaccine advisor to the CDC. You see, back in 2022, when the Democrats used the reconciliation process to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, they purposely and nefariously decided to make the act’s Obamacare (or ACA) subsidies expire in 2025, so that it would make Donald Trump look bad in the first year of his second term. Because of how they knew, psychically, that he would be president and also that Republicans would have majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Either that or, like, both the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act were passed through reconciliation and the Byrd Rule prevents measures that could increase the deficit for a fiscal year beyond the budget window covered by the reconciliation from being made permanent? No, it’s probably that they’re psychic. Here, let host Carl Higbie explain (you can watch the video over on Media Matters): “The reason the government shut down is because Democrats want to do all these subsidies for health care for the ACA, specifically for illegal immigrants and things like that. But the expiration of these health credits, these tax credits and stuff like that, Democrats voted to have it sunset in the first year of the Trump administration for solely political purposes. And now they’re using it to say that Trump is bad. It’s like those people are the ones who made it sunset in the first place.” Well, that just seems like a very plausible scenario. Except for the fact that neither Trump nor any congressional Republicans are actually required to “look bad.” They are perfectly capable of saying they want to open up the government and make the enhanced subsidies permanent, just like — and I can’t believe I’m saying this right now — Marjorie Taylor Greene has done. https://www.wonkette.com/p/newsmax-guys-wax-nostalgic-for-days
As has been pointed out, Democrats put what they could as based on, you know, the law. I'm aware it's something you are unfamiliar with. At any rate, now those same Democrats are saying "Hey, why don't we make these permanent?" and the Republicans are saying "No." Make of that what you will.
