Not sure the point of this "whataboutism" unless you think its okay to shut down the government for revenge reasons.

There's an enormous tactical advantage to being the party that actually does the abolishing, which is why it's so annoying that Democrats (well, Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema) kept doing the Marquess of Queensberry Rules shit during the Biden administration. They could have put in guardrails that would have been incredibly useful right now, but ohhhhhh, nooooo, that wouldn't have been collegial.

I've always assumed that Republicans would abolish it as soon as there was something that they wanted badly enough. Not sure if this counts, because shutting the government down and fucking things up actually fits with their overall goals pretty well.

It’s not whataboutism to point out the supermajority requirement can and has been gotten rid of when Republicans want to. It’s a recent example of them doing just that.

Yeah.... they changed the rules three years before the Barret nomination. Are you trying to say that Democrats are the good guys for forcing the shutdown but Republicans are the bad guys for not changing the rules to stop them? That's a little ridiculous.

When have rules ever stopped Republicans? They want the government shutdown so that they can dupe suckers like you into thinking the shutdown is the Democrats' fault (among other reasons).

I literally heard this on the radio this morning. They are searching for seven Democratic votes to get their bill passed. They will then turn around and ignore all Democratic calls to fund any additional Obamacare subsidies.

Republicans don’t want to do it for two main reasons:

1) They know their policies suck so need Dems to temper them somewhat and then share the blame.

But most importantly:

2) With reconciliation they don’t need to pass supermajority legislation to enact their agenda.

They don’t have a positive constructive vision for this country but only a negative destructive one.

Between controlling the executive (which SCOTUS has declared a royal court) and the judiciary they can dismantle the American state without needing a to pass legislation.

Every couple of years they use Reconciliation to take more money from working people and give more to the oligarchs, SCOTUS continues its march to throw out the rights of women, immigrants and minorities and other ‘theys’ and then whenever in charge of the executive the Cons can just blow it up from the inside.

It is a lot easier to destroy than to build. Republicans want to destroy America. The filibuster doesn’t stop them. But it does stop Dems from rebuilding.

They want to destroy what America could become.

This country started out promising freedom while owning human beings. It has a long history of slavery, segregation, oppression, and inequality. Slowly and slowly as time goes by people have been changing that, pushing for better things, for a place where anyone can be truly free to live their lives in peace, to have the same rights and dignity for every person of every color, orientation, and gender.

This terrifies the fuck out of these assholes, and so they're desperate to destroy what could be by simply killing, imprisoning, and oppressing. Republicans like to talk freedom and liberty, and huddled masses yearning to be free, but want their ilk in charge to lay down the laws that will keep them on top. They are afraid of what we might become if we really did embrace the values this country has claimed to cherish since its founding.

People got used to the idea of everyone having rights in this country, even the Other, and it terrifies these regressive fucks. They have to destroy what we can be, and they have to nip it in the bud before it flowers on the vine, because if people really got a taste of true equity, true liberty, true prosperity through mass cooperation, people might realize they don't need those regressive fucks to "protect" them.

Just like with fundamentalist Christianity, once you get free and realize you never needed those patriarchs for your protection, that they were hiding the truth from you, that there are amazing, wonderful people out here in diverse, infinite combinations, their spell has been broken. Their power has been nullified. You see them for the hucksters they are.

They're terrified of us, so they must destroy us.

FF this is for ACA insurance supplements and Medicaid funding. Neither can be used by illegal immigrants.

There are statutes that require hospital emergency departments to treat anyone regardless of whether they have insurance. This is rolled out as paying for illegals healthcare but it's not the same thing. This will continue regardless of whether Obamacare recipients get subsidized.
