    For a mere $65 billion.

are they planning on using mag-lev trains in this thing?

I just don't see the logic here. the only settlements on the Russian side are currently only accessible by sea and air. There's maybe 12 000 people and 1300 miles to cross to even hook up to the TSR . We haven't even started on how pointless this thing would be on the Alaska side...

It just strikes me as being the long way around, even if it is super cool.

Juneau is the world's second busiest air cargo port, second to Memphis.

Considering maritime shipping is much cheaper than RR I'm not seeing the point of this.

Speed being one thing. It is faster than boat, but not as expensive as flying (once the cost of the tunnel is spread out).

At least, that is my guess Tex.

So Mexico is trying to steal the South West and now Russia is trying to steal Alaska.

    Damn...just damn..... ;)

But seriously we don't need no railroad from the Russians.

I dunno . . . lots of seismic activity in that part of the world. I'd be concerned about that.

Yeah... no matter how you slice it, it'll still mean laying down a few thousand miles of rail to connect to main lines on both sides. Not too mention the diversion to get there...

Between having to either go by ship or whatever already exists to Juneau, there's still several hundred miles of Alaska to cover before getting to the narrowest parts of the Bering. Once you hit Russia, same distance doubles to the Trans SIberian Railway or down to the Chinese border. Most of this is through arctic mountain regions. Nice idea, but pretty impractical.

Guys, what's going on here is obvious:

Clearly they are hiding production of an underwater rocket launching facility from which to launch the salvation of mankind.

As a space fan I can't express how infuriating this is. Absolutely colossal amounts of money to build obsolete railways up to and across the bering sea... we have cargo planes and giant ships for that.

What could be brought from Russia to America by way of Alaska and the bering sea tunnel on a train, that couldn't be better brought from Russia to America by way of Vladivostok and L.A. on one of these:

To say nothing of the times the rail line will be impassable due to avalanche, snowdrift and such like things, because it goes through the DEPTHS OF FUCKING ALASKA AND SIBERIA...

The 65 billion would be much better spent on advancing the space program.

Actually, Memphis has dropped to second.

    Hong Kong is first.

Juneau is ... not even on the list. :marathon:

    Anchorage, however, is #5.

Prediction: It will happen because our politicians are nuts and instead of doing smart things would do something stupid like support a railroad from Russia to Alaska.

Probably get some stupid Democrat crowing: "Now Sarah can go to Russia instead of just looking at it from her house."

Obama wishes he could come up with a "shovel ready" job program this FAIL prone. Expensive, unnecessary, and unsustainable...the perfect storm!

Regardless, quit Stalin' and start Rushin' into the project already!

And folks I'm telling you I tried to come up with a good Yaki Smirnov
"What a country! In Russia trains......." joke but couldn't.

I wish they were also building a bridge so I can just friggin' drive from the Lower 48 to Europe. Road trip. Of. A. Lifetime.

Wouldn't an atlantic bridge keep slowly snapping in the middle every few years?

I guess that if they didn't build it using standardized technology such as spacers, that yes, it could theoretically snap.

Why would they build a bridge over the Atlantic? :wtf:

Yeah they decided the Bering Straight was in a poor demographic so they relocated it to the Atlantic ocean.

Not that there was ever a chance in hell that this was going to happen, but had they started it, and things gone to plan, they would be scheduled to open it right about now. Instead, Pootie-Poot decided to blow $300 billion on invading Ukraine.

Nevermind the road network needing to be built up west of Fairbanks to Nome, and across the Russian Far Far East, but I could have been planning a roadtrip to Europe or India by now, nevermind the roving gangs of road bandits in Russia :PGT:
