Okay, we all know that Senator Obama's middle name is Hussein. Ladies and gentlemen of the Red Room, I am cutting and pasting something I posted in TNZ a short time ago... What if Senator Obama had said something like this... "My name is Barack Hussein Obama...Like so many of you, my parents chose my name. Now, I know that my middle name is associated with a dictator and Middle Eastern despots. Throughout history, names have been used well and badly. The name Timothy became associated with a man who took hundreds of lives in Oklahoma City. The name Adolf became associated with a mass murderer who took the lives of millions of people. The names Ted, Jeffrey and David have also been associated with murderers and terrorists. And yet there are millions of people with those names around the world. There are millions of people, too, that have the name Hussein that are not terrorists or dictators. I'd like to do what other people named Timothy, David, Jeffrey, and even Adolf have done. I won't shy away from my name just because some people think it's a bad thing." Would that possibly defuse the "terrorist" idea that has gone with his name?
I think reacting to name games at all should be beneath him. People who make fun about other people's names disqualify themselves.
Lemme ask this...How many of you here use your full middle name on a regular basis? How many have their full middle name on their drivers license?
For quite some time, people on the conservative side of things have used the name like it's a horrible thing. So why not say to the public, "I know you know there's more to a name than one guy." I'm an optimist, perhaps, in believing that Americans can think through matters enough to know that just because one person's middle name happens to be Hussein doesn't mean he's a terrorist or Muslim.
Me. I dislike my first name and only use the initial on signatures. We don't allow abbreviations on driver's licenses.
I'm an optimist, Lt. Mewa. I think people can be properly educated. No one thinks twice about naming their kid Timmy.
In case anyone's wondering: Joseph Robinette Biden (yeah, kinda fruity). He should go by 'J.R.' John Sidney McCain (also kinda fruity). Sarah Louise Heath Palin. not so fruity. But yeah... no. That wouldn't have helped him at all, and he'd have sounded like a condescending jackass.
Never on a regular basis. Only if I'm having to fill out some kind of serious paperwork. I do, but I think it's required on our driver's licenses.
I don't even have a middle name. My dad was teased so much about his he was determined no child of his would ever suffer... Caused me much grief as a kid when we were playing that game where you can take one step forward for every time a letter appears in your name...
Stupid topic from the beginning. Never deserved the dignity of a response, and it's only gotten worse with time. Like most political subjects, actually. Just another opportunity for people to parade what mindless, contemptible assholes they are.
I think by acknowledging the problem, you're creating one. You're better than this. Start a good thread.
People who think the name is an issue cannot be properly educated. That's the point -- he doesn't hide the name, but if they are that stupid, they won't be swayed by him or anybody else pointing out that it is a common name in Africa and the M.E.
True education on a thing can sometimes take years. All it starts with is one person saying, "Hey, wait a minute! This isn't me!"
