I'd rather a sympathetic character not die but it does feel like they would maybe tied their own hands a bit in terms of what came next for Gorn relations if she'd lived. Plus the forfeit the "how do I deal with this?" complexity at the end. Sean Ferrick notes that they could have done the exact same story without the explicit appearance of the Metron which...he's not wrong, but I didn't mind that bit. It does create an inference (don't know if it was intentional) that after they thought they had learned something via Erica's (and the Gorn's)trial, La'an kinda fucked it up by shooting her and so now they have to ponder some more. I think it works either way but until he said it I hadn't considered that, really, the involvement of the Metrons didn't do anything to or for the episode.
Same. It didn't bother me they were there, but if you'd have taken them away it would have neither added nor removed anything of value, but apparently it fixes some kind of canon thing somewhere and so I guess they had to put it in there. Either way, I enjoyed the episode.
I've gotta disagree with Sean on this one. I think the Metron was part of the point and payoff. Sure, the story worked without it showing up but the appearance is what made this a Trek episode by splicing it into the "Arena" mythos. Any other time we've seen the "enemy Mine" trope, it's been relatively forgettable with no relevance to anything that comes before or after.
Am I the only one who believes this isn't necessarily a good idea? TOS has been done before and for a long time. Frankly, I'm tired of prequels. If they are set on bringing back TOS characters, I'd rather they set it AFTER the 5 year mission in the TOS movie era or something like that. I'm OK with a few continuity errors here and there for the sake of giving me a good show but re-doing TOS is bound to be a disaster, IMHO.
Right there with ya. It lacks vision, and by definition limits itself. The sweet spot is between YMP and TWOK. There's a whole decade to fill there, a great lot that can be done without needing to conflict with anything later in the chronology. Assuming they want to stick with a Kirk/Spock crew. Also fixes the problem of Wesley's age. MAYBE you do a "first voyage" movie and see if you can wash the taste of S31 out of our collective minds. I'd kinda like to see Gary Mitchell turn up if cast well. Maybe some flashback stuff to build their history together - or not. But not a series. (Yes, if they make it I'll watch, but I think it's a weak pitch)
I'm expecting La'an to have to remove herself from history in the final season, a follow up to the earlier baby Khan ep. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if her Romulan style behaviour in Four and a Half Vulcans is down to a time travelling Romulan making the beast with two backs with Khan, and she's the descendant of that pairing. Move the Spock romance along, and then she has to make the choice between her and Spock's happiness or the Federation's future survival. Last scene is her knocking on past Pelia's door with a sad smile and a tale to tell.
Enemy Monitor Lizard worked well, the trope elevated with the the history of the Gorn and Ortegas' and La'an's traumas, and especially with La'an killing the Gorn. It was especially good as, while I appreciate them making the Gorn more alien - something Trek rarely does with repeat species - they've also made them look like animalistic Magog, so it was good seeing them as intelligent and advanced beings. Add in they've obviously got some primal revulsion to the extradimensional baddies Nurse Fred Shurt got infected with, and I'm hoping we get some payoffs from that, maybe with Batel gaining insights in to the Gorn. I felt the Metrons were not needed, sometimes keeping the mystery so viewers can theory away is part of the entertainment value - it's association with Arena was obvious, so let the fans make their own opinions up if the watchers were the Metrons or not. When Trek usually does these types of episodes they're "bottle" ones, and in the case of ENT actually had a rundown of things the crew had encountered that sounded a lot better than what had been shown to the viewer. I'm very much glad this wasn't one of those.
The two franchises are certainly flirting with one another, live action. My worry is any consummation would be more Romeo and Juliet, with both franchises dead, than happily every after. Keep it to the comics and fanfic.
S03E10, "New Life and New Civilizations This season finale was... okay. There were some good moments, like Kirk and Spock really working that shipping angle for the fans, the visuals were on point as always, there were some good sentiments (that when people pass on they don't go away, and their memory is just as real as they are, et. al), but the climax of the episode, and the season itself tied in was just... eh? The words "super easy, barely an inconvenience" immediately come to mind. Still, not bad, and I'll miss Captain Batel.
She also could have hooked up with McCoy during the events of City on the Edge of Forever somehow. Or Bashir during either the Bell Riots or during the "Trouble with Tribbles" timeframe. Or the EMH during the time when they went to 1990s L.A. Can't think of a time when Phlox time-traveled or any of the folks from the streaming series.
Streaming era... Elder-Picard was in the 21st century with the La Sirina gang. Wesley Crusher was hanging around in the same era looking for Time Agent/Gary Seven recruits. Burnham's mom rescued those WW3 era folks that became the Amish colony who made the Red Angel into a religion.
is it just my poor memory or is there a lot of overlap between the description of the Vezda and the framing if the Picard S1 baddies?
First thing that came to mind. Star Trek : The Buffy Generation. This episode was boring, it is not Star Trek, it's a CW show with the Star Trek label slapped on it and I've lost interest in it. The Discovery like segment with Pike and Betel growing old was an absolute snooze fest. Bringing back Gamble was again, God awful. Are the writers aware that Starfleet is voluntary? They can quit at any time and just live their lives, it's not a paid job. Honestly, I'm glad it's over and I doubt I'll be back for the last two seasons.
Pretty much. Someone elsewhere said a mixed bag to a mixed season, and I agree. I was getting ready to do my episode rankings for this season, and so here they are: From best to worst: 1. The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail 2. Terrarium 3. Wedding Bell Blues 4. A Space Adventure Hour 5. New Life and New Civilizations 6. Hegemony, Pt. II 7. Through The Lens of Time 8. Shuttle to Kenfori 9. Four-And-A-Half Vulcans 10. What is Starfleet? I sincerely hope we're done with the Gorn and with the constant relationship swapping this season. It made for a very bipolar season, IMO.
given the intimate relationship with Spock and her H2H skill, La'an's plausible. She can probably do a 5 point palm exploding heart punch too, just to piss some types off. Otherwise, the lifetime in a moment was well used and beautifully played. That last pan with Pike and Una staring into nothing, holding their drinks, would've made a perfect series finale. It wasn't wasted here, but they nailed the grief vibe perfectly in that tableau. A few good laughs, and once again they show us what "fans always knew" about Kirk and Spock being connected. I think that's one of the better things nuTrek has given us... some acknowledgement of Fanon that expands the characters yet doesn't remake them.
as has been said, "You meet an asshole in the morning, you met an asshole. You run into them all day, well..."
Up until the aging together sequence, I was pretty bored with this episode. Even though it was a little too long, I liked it and liked the knocking theme throughout. And I agree that the big battle between Batel and whatshisface was pretty anticlimactic. On a side note, I'm really glad that they made the Farragut a twin-nacelle destroyer design. And this: I'd like to revise and extend my remarks to say that La'an with extensions: And auburn(?)-haired Chapel: , though I don't know if it's the medical uniforms having an unflattering fit or what, but that poor white girl's got no booty.
None of those folks are doctors, though, is what I mean. Culber from Discovery, the Rios EMH from Picard, for that matter T'ana from Lower Decks and M'Benga from SNW have not time traveled to the best of my recollection and so couldn't be "time traveling doctors."
Yeah, sanding her edges and showing off her physique has paid off. She's very fit, but still curvy. But honestly, Ortegas kinda does it for me. 99% sure I ran into her at the jerk chicken place across the street last year.
