stumbled over a youtube comment I posted a year ago and I can't remember if I ever shared it here or not. It's in reference to "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" and my then ongoing rewatch of "Fringe" I assume Kurtzman given his heavy involvement in Fringe.
The "Space Adventure" ep was pretty good, but let down with a little too much self-aggrandisement over its importance, when maybe self-depreciation would have served it better. I'm not too fond of holodeck episodes, but this had the benefit of Pike wanting to bury it like nuclear waste, whereas Picard, Sisko, and Janeway may as well all have said "well, that won't happen again" in a knowing manner, before turning around to the camera, winking, and saying "until next season!" and the credits roll to the Looney Tunes theme. "Through the Typo of Trope" was basically the kind of ep what Disco S3 onwards should have been having, although I'm pretty sure we'll see the escapee's tale continue in Starfleet Academy before end of S1. New guy opens the episode up? His goose is cooked. Oh, there's a action/horror element, and he's black, oh it's cooked twice. I mean, he just needed to confide in someone he was a virgin too, and he'd have hit every early death trope imaginable. It wasn't the best, and Dr Who did it better when it was called "The Well", but this was pushing some more esoteric sci-fi concepts than Trek usually wades in, hopefully we'll see more of what the not-the-Vorlons left behind.
They could make it a really horrible practical joke. You can imagine the cut scene in Relics. Scotty: Commander Riker, a question about young LaForge? Why's he wearing the VISOR doohickey? Back in my day the good Doctor would have regenerated them in two swigs of a Saurian brandy. Riker: Ongoing joke. Wait 'til you meet the Captain, <sotto voce> we've not told him he's meant to be French yet.
I'm usually a "WHY is Kirk here?" fan, feeling like he's stepping on the regulars. But this might be the best case of needle threading yet. It never feels like the gravity of the situation is laid aside so we can bask in the presence of Kirk. Instead they did so very solid character building along the way. I'm trying to think of bits to grumble about (as I do every ep because I feel like, with only a couple of exceptions, I'm always maybe the only one to immediately say "I liked it!") but I haven't yet
S03E06, "The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail" This was a damn good episode and I felt like we are back to form compared to last week. We're on the edges of explored space, we get a great setup with Kirk and the Farragut (which looks, well looked, gorgeous), a strange monstrous ship that has actual history and legend attached to it, and I love the design, I thought the chemistry between Kirk and Spock was solid, as well as with the other crew who we know go on to become Kirk's officers, and it was just great, I loved it!
Did I just watch an episode of Star Trek? As in The Original Series. I was originally going to lambast it for ripping off The Doomsday Machine, which they did, but I liked what they did with it. Ethan Peck is getting better as Spock and they got Kirk's characterization right in this one. Pellia still annoys the shit out of me and I like Carol Kane, but this character is not a good fit and not needed. I think they might be setting up Pike's sentiments in The Cage where he's feeling bad about losing too many people and stuff like that. I definitely got some TWOK vibes. When Kirk walked off the bridge I was yelling at the TV "Spock go talk to him!" and they delivered. This would have been a perfect moment to introduce Bones. I liked the twist at the end, it was very reminiscent of TOS/TNG/VOY.
If you mean setting up by him teaching Kirk about that, fine. But they aren't setting it up for Pike, because The Cage has already happened for him.
Pretty much. It felt like a proof of concept to fill in the missing bookends of TOS-i.e.: years one and five. Agreed on the -Doomsday Machine, but I also got notes of the Pakleds in LD. I just can't see Pellia so much as Simka at 70. They really need a throwaway line referencing Taxi. Anybody else catch the Atari when they dug up the phones? Ortegas-"personal massager?". Damn... I'm not sure the twist ending works for me as is... they should've been borgified or something not to have somehow figured out/cared that Earth had survived then thrived somehow in 200 years since their departure. Especially after 30 seconds of attacking the Farragut.
I love how she mentioned she was a roadie for the (Grateful) Dead, and Erica's like "you can talk to dead people?" That whole scene was killing me, I loved it so much.
I agree they do act like Pakleds and I agree the humans should be more borgified, but I can overlook that because of the quality of the episode.
Oh... nitpick of the episode is Scotty in the Jefferies tube on the Farragut. Why did it lead up? I'm not a fan of the curved pylons nor the negative space in the configuration.I think it's something to do with the way the arc angles asymmetrically at the saucer creating a visual tension point.
it was alright, but I don't know if it stands out for me other than the aforementioned dry run for a TOS reimagining to see if it could work.
No, it's that I don't care much to have modern Trek limited to the production values and stylings of 60 years ago. Let alone its own internal inconsistencies or now historical inaccuracies. the problem sweetheart, is that you can't bear the fact the writers of modern trek have done a way better job than any fanfic you never finished writing.
Pure fucking fantasy. They shit on Star Trek and Shatner and Gene Roddenberry two episodes ago and you clapped like a seal. Last week they had ten minutes of teenage drama and dialogue. You’re delusional. You favor style over substance and that’s pathetic , sweetheart. Story and character should come first over set design. A perfect example of that is Star Trek Continues which pays way more respect to TOS and the fans than these writers have.
*Butterfly net goes over FF's head* *FF is thrown into a white van marked "Loony Bin"* *Loony-wagon drives off playing ice cream truck music*
Really enjoyed the latest episode "Spocks cat eats it's own tail" or something, best this year and hopefully setting the tone for the rest.
Not true and they’re not rage farmers and they don’t give me my opinions. I form my own opinions and I remind you that a big chunk of the audience has dropped off because they don’t like this stuff so no you’re wrong and you’ve convinced yourself that you’re right. You’re full of shit.
Yet the show was canceled just like Discovery, Prodigy and Lower Decks. They’re not significant numbers.
