If you want to get more precise, we could also call them human beings to whom we have decided to deny the opportunity that our ancestors had, provided that "we" are people whose ancestors came from western and northern Europe.

It is kind of funny when you pare it down. Our ancestors showed up to a land filled with indigenous people and we basically said "God said we could have this land," and then we just kind of took it by hook or by crook, and now people want to show up, work as a part of this society, and so many of us shove them away asking them what right they think they have to just show up.

I've done a lot of research into my mom's side of the family, all of whom arrived here in roughly the last quarter of the 19th century. Her mother's family was 100% Norwegian, and her father's was 100% German. Their motives and characteristics were strikingly similar to those of immigrants today. What's different is the level of opportunity the people who arrived previously chose to offer them.

The biggest reason they came was economic opportunity, which is why I have to laugh when anybody says today's immigrants are "economic migrants" as if that's a bad thing. A second motivation, on the German side, was fear of being drafted into the Prussian army.

Conservatives love to bitch about people speaking languages other than English, but the first generation of my ancestors to come here lived in German and Norwegian enclaves in North Dakota and continued speaking their native languages for their entire lives. I have some of their obituaries, which were published in Norwegian in a Norwegian-language newspaper that served the Norwegian-speaking community.

However, when they arrived, there were no quotas, no barriers, and no hoops to jump through.

All they had to do was get on a boat, show up at the Port of Detroit, and if I remember correctly, take a blood test to prove they didn't have syphilis. They didn't need a green card or a special visa. They just showed up and started farming. Four or five years later, they signed a document forswearing any allegiance to the king of their native country, and just like that, they were citizens.

The difference?

They were white.

If someone decides to open a business, then that business is open to the public. Period. After s/he opens the doors, he has zero say in who gets to enter or buy. If he does, he is committing a fucking crime. So, now s/he is an illegal business owner.

If someone wants to sell shit to only certain people, that person can crawl up their own ass with a copy of the bill of rights including all amendments including the one stating public business cannot discriminate.

Who said anything about discrimination? Could be any number of reasons you are shown the door.
