To do my yearly taxes I just log into my Australian Tax Office account, and click through a checklist of auto filled out items, adding any deductions for charity donations and the like that weren't automatically already in there. For a simple tax return takes less than five minutes and if a refund is the result it appears in my bank account within a few days.

Which is true of so VERY many aspects of American life that is slower, less efficient, more frustrating, and more expensive because someone somewhere is making major bank off of that situation and they use some of that wealth to protect their business model from any politician sane enough to challenge it

Technically as a veteran, he was a DEI Hire. In a lot of government jobs, veterans get hiring preference, which is a DEI policy.

We could do this here. The IRS has all the information it needs to mail you a letter with what it thinks your tax bill will be based on the information they receive via W2 and 1099 forms, and then you would only need to file if their information is inaccurate or incomplete.

But the tax preparation firms and the anti-government zealots lobbied hard against it.

The tax prep firms want doing your taxes to be as painful as possible so they'll get more business. The anti-government zealots want doing your taxes to be as painful as possible to maximize resentment.

So applying for a Fed Civil Service job is an entirely different beast from any other job you have ever applied for. It is insane. If it has you need have say ten years working with the Microsoft office suite, including programs x, y and z doing a, b and c things then you need every job for the last ten years to have a bullet point using their exact same phrasing otherwise you aren’t qualified and are dismissed. But you’ll go ahead and add that paragraph bullet point to every job it applies to to show extra experience. You can easily have a 30 page resume.

Because due to past patronage reasons there is very little subjectivity allowed in FedJob hiring. No one is allowed to interpret. You either have or you haven’t. You did or you didn’t. You said or you didn’t.

Anyway it eventually comes down to a score on a 0-100 scale. Top score gets hired.

    Disabled Vets get a 10 point bonus. Non-disabled 5.

Dizzy was a man in the book and also a minor character, then in the movie they changed Dizzy into a woman and made her a main character and that's TOO WOKE TO BE ACCEPTABLE!

Johnny was Filipino in the book and was white in the movie, but that's fine, because, reasons.

I love how UA keeps dunking on himself by revealing his low income, simple tax filing status.

Meanwhile, I didn't receive tax forms for my various investments until just last week. How am I supposed to file taxes without those?

According to your arbitrary, self-serving terms of the moment, which are not binding.

I support the punishment fitting the crime. No more, no less. Anything beyond that is your fabrication.

Congratulations for finally learning that people are not monolithic categories. My point stands.

No, I don't share in your hysterical pearl-clutching desire to pretetend this is a special case subject to special rules. And no, this is not the first time I have commented on criminal activity.

No, you listed generic, blanket categories. Casting a wide enough net to always leave yourself room to weasel out of it. The only thing I've said about his "trans policy" is that I wouldn't have kicked them out of the military. The most I've cared to say about Ukraine is that I don't want any more of our cash and equipment sent over there. If I've forgotten something, feel free to prove me wrong with a direct quote explicitly supporting your bullshit claim.

Here it's required to pay taxes in the year earned. Employers withhold the estimated amount from each paycheck. The self employed need to pay their estimated amount quarterly. The following year when you file the tax "return" it settles with either you owing more or getting a refund. If you owe more than 10% you pay a penalty in addition to the tax. You're liable for any discrepancy up to 7 years. Detailed records have to be kept. It can be quite complicated with the return being hundreds of pages.

In Europe you pay the following year based on tax calculation that is very simple. At least it was in France when I lived there in the 90s.

I did skip the country without paying tax for the last year. Don't hurt me.

Oh, and I had to file taxes to the IRS for the years I was in France even though I earned no money in the states. Over some amount you have to pay US tax on foreign earnings.
