Private Data and Passwords of Senior U.S. Security Officials Found Online

Private contact details of the most important security advisers to U.S. President Donald Trump can be found on the internet. DER SPIEGEL reporters were able to find mobile phone numbers, email addresses and even some passwords belonging to the top officials.
To do so, the reporters used commercial people search engines along with hacked customer data that has been published on the web. Those affected by the leaks include National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Records retention laws broken. Handling of classified information laws broken. Transmitting classified on an unapproved system. Outside of a SCIF. As someone who works in the IC I can say with 100% certainty that laws and regulations were broken and damage done to US national security. There’s no excuse. Heads need to roll. Having said that, they’ll probably find some GS-9 comms tech who loaded Signal on a phone to blame for the whole thing.

    This.

This very kind of information (attack plans, troop movements) is what the Nazis developed the friggin Enigma for. If you're looking for like THE basic thing that you'd want to keep secret in a military conflict because there could be IMMEDIATE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES if you dont't , this is it. The fact that we're even discussing this makes me want to hit my head against the wall.

And no, Signal being secure does not change a thing, that's not the point. This is like Göring mailing a complementary Enigma to a journalist, along with a note saying "hey, here are today's decryption keys for the Luftwaffe".

It's kind of like when a wrestling heel with go-away heat comes back after being gone for a while. Everyone cheers the first few times, then they remember why he had go-away heat.

Re: Jeffrey Goldberg, what in your opinion should he have done and why?

I get the rationale behind him ultimately removing himself from the chat... arguably staying on the chat and continuing to get classified info he knows he wasn't entitled to would be illegal on his part, and certainly a vengeful Trump administration might try prosecuting him for that. (Which is not to say that I agree with his decision, just that I could understand the basis for it).

According to Goldberg's account, when he got invited to the chat, he did not initially believe the chat was real. Not until after the Yemen strikes actually were happening. I suppose there's an argument that he should have immediately tried to figure out if the Signal chat was real and why he was on it, or to address the underlying attack and its problematic nature earlier, but still.

It seems at some point he is going to have to report on the security breach, in which time the conspirators are going to be more savvy and be better able to plan more secretively. His reporting on the situation was not with the "aim of ensuring that future crimes are planned more secretly" although that is the all-too-inevitable by-product.

Re: it taking as long as it did to print the story, at least some of that time was probably necessary (or at least prudent) in order to look at legal/ethical/journalistic questions.

For instance, Journalism 101 is going to require doing some level of investigating as to whether the Signal texts were real or not. That means reaching out to every identified person in those texts, seeing if they have a response, questioning their response, etc.

Because at least some of the information in these texts was presumptively classified, that requires some thinking about what to print or not print of the texts themselves. (Initially, the decision was to withhold most of the texts on the grounds that they were prima facie classified. He later opted to print the entirety of the conversations)

Also because of the presumptive classification, there is a good chance of someone coming after Goldberg or the paper. So there presumably was some legal research that needed to be done as to their potential defenses.

Now could some of that have been done sooner? Probably. But I don't think it was so long that it's fair to say Goldberg was sitting on anything.

It's almost as though the ceasefire was just a ploy for the Trump administration and Israel as opposed to an actual breakthrough....
