Buy a lot of Mexican tomatoes? What part of your grocery bill is higher than a year ago?

I spoke with an American importer yesterday that I've known for some time. He imports shelf stable fruits, vegetables and fish from all over the world

While he's passed some of the tariff cost on to customers he's also ate a ton of it in the form of his margin - that, coupled with a sluggish economy and people tightening their purse strings he said he's not going to be able to do Christmas bonuses this year for his company. Been one of his worst years in the 30+ he's been open

    Um, beef. For one.
Id have to go line by line for more detailed answers, but in general my biweekly grocery bill has gone up anywhere from 30% to 40%.

Where I live: tomatoes, beef is WAY up, hell even things like frozen pizzas are up, most prepared meals have skyrocketed, basics like beans and rice are higher. I could go on, but the fact is that yes, anyone who touches on reality and has to shop with severely limited resources are aware of how expensive things are right now.

Hell, people don't have to take my word for it:

Yep. $3 a dozen here. Also, it's about $3 a pound for those tomatoes, which come from Mexico as do the vast majority of imported tomatoes, @Tererunererun.

Seriously, did you check before you asked that question?

Anyway, at least in my area lettuce is $3 a head. Carrots are $3 a bag. Ground beef (that is 70/30, the bare minimum) is $8 to $9 a pound, and expected to crest $10 a pound by next year. Even alternatives like ground chicken or ground turkey is about $6 a pound. Hell, a bag of fucking Doritos is $6 a bag.

Right now I'm buying the cheapest cheap food I can buy. The stuff that's not healthy for you at all but will feed several people over the course of a week. We've long stopped cutting into fat and we're cutting into muscle. This isn't a matter of living within one's means, this is literally a "can't afford food and shelter or food and medicine at the same time" situation, and a lot of people are feeling it. You can't save what you don't have, and so on and so on.

It's rough for a lot of people in the country right now and it's all Donald Trump's self-inflicted tariff economy. Well, that and normal corporate greed unchecked.

He's seen the polls showing Americans are largely blaming him for high prices and is reversing course. Smart pivot, but a simple knowledge of American history would have prevented this mistake in the first place.

    Since a year ago?

    Maybe five years ago.

Yes, five years. 3.2% in the last year.

I need you to understand that you're a numpty, and that's why only @Steal Your Face seems to like what you have to say, like an idiot. Why are you always so wrong about things and yet so confident? Dunning-Kruger?

Hell, I don't know. I may be one of the last few who don't ignore you because all you contribute is day late, dollar short bullshit.

Edit: Added you to ignore list. If I want an idiot to show up talking about the wrong things at the wrong time and missing the point entirely, I'll wait for @Steal Your Face to say something. Anything.

ok let me get this straight we were hummng along with trade not favorable with everybody but a 'balance' had been achevied then the pedo felon decides that Epstein might just take all the attention so he starts screwing with tarrifs. prices that were already going up start going up at a faster rate. this hurt large section of america (the farmers) so NOW he is going to spend 12 BILLION dollars that we would not have had to spend because the pedo felon wanted to distract from Epstein. i cannot understand how anybody can support this. this is stupid to the extreme

No. Tariffs are Trump's signature policy.

Don't confuse his idiocy enacting them with anything else.
