Forget the whole "Everything here just wants to kill you" stuff. Because this is bad. Bad, bad, bad. Worse than rats and rabbits are going to wipe everything out bad. The MAGAt virus has now become the Make Australia Great Again virus. Sovereign Citizen Responds to Parking Fine With 300-Page Letter Ain't fucking around here. You know the OKC bombing? Waco, TX, and the Branch Davidians? Yeah, shit like this goes real deep in their DNA. Real deep. Like you're a time traveler in Germany about 100 years ago and you're trying to find this particular artist that people think is pretty shitty but he's important to you. No joke.
Eh, sovcit nutters exist in every country and have been around (if not earlier) from the widespread adoption of email. For decades now it's been a common thing to see a random Australian forwarding an email or Facebook post that is clearly some US nonsense with a couple of name swaps.
So, what you're saying is that you're still in the stage we were back in the early 00s when we thought they were funny. That turned out well for us, didn't it?
The more I read and watch about the sovereign citizens, I think that they are actually correct. Their ideals and beliefs are not that different than those of the political figures from the United States, well, before the country was the United States. Patrick Henry, was opposed to centralized authority and government over reach. His insistence on local and individual rights is similar to the sovereign citizens beliefs. Thomas Jefferson, his stance emphasized natural rights and the idea that governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed, and limiting government authority over individuals aligns with the sovereign citizen movement. Samuel Adams, believed in local autonomy and the right of communities to resist what they saw as illegitimate authority. This is also what the core belief of the sovereign citizen movement is at. Benjamin Franklin, he advocated for self rule and decentralized decision making before fully supporting federal decision making and oversight. Once again a predecessor to the sovereign citizen movement.
I can remember Sovereign Citizens from nearly thirty years ago. I had them spouting their crazy ass crap where I worked as a manager. They'd spout crap like "I live behind here and I'm on the HOA" or "I'll call my lawyer" and then throw in Sovereign Citizen shit on top of it, like "I have sovereign immunity, I don't have to pay taxes!" Me not giving a crap about the job, my response response would be "What the fuck does that have to do with sales tax?" or "Your bitching over 43 cents, how would you have a lawyer on retention?".
Would "I live in Oregon. We don't have sales tax! Why should I pay it here?" have worked? (It doesn't even work in Washington anymore since they discontinued reciprocity ~10 years ago )
Not going to downplay risk of some of these groups, but I'm still not too concerned overall. At the election this year the right wing of politics got absolutely smacked down for being perceived as too American.
