You have zero chance of fighting the decision or benefiting from new evidence if you are dead, not true of imprisonment.

The quote I often hear, which was not used here, is "better a thousand guilty men go free..." That's what my brain was working with, 'cause that's how I usually hear it.

And even if those 1,000 remain in prison, we all know (again), that not all of them will stay there for life. The last time I heard a statistic, the average actual time served for murder is only seven years. Murderers are apparently being set free all the time, some just to make room in the overcrowded prison system. And many of them are committing more murders once they get out.

Why? It's irrelevant and also unanswerable as that would be an individual reaction that would be different with each person.

Some people because of their personalities would rather die than live in a cage...others would have the will to live through anything.

Perhaps all murderers should be given a choice...life imprisionment or execution and then maybe we could answer your question with any kind of objective evidence.

I misread the question, yay dyslexia. So let's see, I equate the death penalty with premeditated murder (since really that's what it is), and you equate imprisonment with the death penalty. Do I have it about right? Because that's fucked up. But then people who would rather let wrongly convicted persons die just to make sure they can keep having their state-sanctioned revenge are pretty fucked up and tend to make comparisons like that, as if wrongly executing someone is somehow better than wrongly imprisoning them.

It's catchy, but the proper comparison is how many innocent lives are saved for each one lost. I don't know how many have been saved so far, but "innocents lost" is almost up to 1.

And I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure the death penalty has prevented me from killing at least one or two people who clearly deserved it.

On the contrary, some have argued it's better an innocent person spend their life in prison than for an innocent person to put to death.

EXACTLY!

It does depend upon the individual, so the notion that's it's better to be imprisoned for life than put to death is far from universal yet some in this very thread have insisted otherwise.

You continue to respond to an argument no one is making.

It's getting to the point where I don't believe you are actually interested in having a discussion but instead are simply regurgitating a characterization you deem clever or in some way insightful.

No.
Then why do you keep bringing it up as an arguing point?

Quote:

Actually quite a few people have been making the argument that wrongful imprisonment is just as bad as wrongful execution, so there's no reason not to continue executing prisoners.

Re: "Better a thousand monsters be let live than one innocent man be put to death in error

Well, actually, that question has nothing to do with the American Death Penalty. In our system, you have upwards of 15 years to go over the evidence and show your innocence. Plus, many good laywers tend to do pro-bono DP appeals. If you can't find a cause to set aside your guilty verdict after 15 years of working with a lawyer, sorry pal, but the odds are you're guilty. And in fact, under such conditions, there has only been one Death Row Inmate that I'm aware of EVER getting proved innocent. So really, I'm thinking the equation is 1/10,000 or 1/20,000 of American Death Row inmates are innocent. So asking about 1/1000 or 1/100 is really stretching things.

Secondly, as has been pointed out here before, "Life" doesn't really mean "Life" but somewhere around 7 years. So if you give Fat Tony "Life" for murdering Ned Flanders, he'll be back on the streets in 7 years. I don't see how that protects the public from killers on the loose. If "Life" meant LIFE there's no reason to fry people in the electric chair, but "Life" means 7 years.
