Kirk wanted to make it obvious that he was "cheating" because he was, in reality, protesting the Kobayahi Maru itself.

If he had beaten it, and it hadn't been obvious that he had changed the terms, his actions would have been indefensible.

Agreed. Kirk considered the test itself to be a cheat and said as much during his hearing. His attitude during the test was an indictment of the test and what he considered to be the flawed ideology behind it.

Agreed that he probably didn't want to give the impression that he was trying to get away with it. Even so, it was a little over the top for my taste.

Comment: Presumably only the first attempt counts, as afterwards you know what's coming and the effect just isn't the same. So I'd think the Academy would be much more upset over the required breach of security (and the fact that he didn't get the point, which certainly doesn't require a disciplinary hearing or whatever) than over Kirk "cheating", per se.
