Re: Star Trek DVD Out Today

I got it on iTunes, regular quality, so I could sync it to my iPod and have the glory that is Spock in my pocket.
Sure, the screen is tiny, but I'm ok with it because I love this move.

My friend got it on BluRay so we'll be watching it on his hi-def TV at some point next week.

Re: Star Trek DVD Out Today

Watching it now. First DVD I bought in all of 2009 and probably the last DVD I'll ever buy before upgrading to BR some time next year. That whole "You are currently on Region 1 but this is a Region 2 DVD so you'll have to change and you can only change 4 more times afterwards" made me angry as fuck again. Hello, I just paid close to 30$ for the SINGLE DVD edition (a.k.a. vastly overpriced) and you're still giving me shit? Next time I'll just download it you fucking pricks.

Re: Star Trek DVD Out Today

Last night, I bought my first Blu Ray. I don't have a player yet. I watched it at my cousin's house, as I helped them put together their theater room. It was glorious on the 106" screen (1080p projector).

I'm not sure, to be honest, if it was taking advantage of his 7.1 surround but it sounded fantastic anyways.

I am now looking to acquire a used blu ray player, as I am a cheap sonofa (word count cut due to pricing).

Got a player second-hand from a friend for $50, and he just donated a Blu-Ray of Stargate (the movie) as my officiial first disk. It does look quite awesome!

Well then, that will make it easier to get cheap slightly used one!

"New" doesn't have the appeal to me it does to most people, because as soon as I use it, it's not new anymore.

Is it? If I can't find one, I'll buy one new, but I'm gonna try to get a good used one first.

Watched the DVD over the weekend.

Was struck once again on how horribly unnecessary it was to change the ship so much. Caught myself thinking about how an unmolested Connie woulda looked in some of those beautiful scenes.

Re: Star Trek DVD Out Today

Hmm, upon watching it yet again, the only problem I have with the movie is the excessive comedy. Of course, if they're to reboot the franchise and give it any chance of continuing, they had to add in a lot of humor. Otherwise, the characters are pretty much right, and there is potential (especially with Spock and Bones) to do some deep character development in later movies (which I really, really hope they do).

I would have preferred that Kirk had not been so flip during the Kobayashi Maru scenario. I'd like to have seen him going by the book when he computer suddenly glitches and he wins. OldKirk was a maverick, but he was a professional.

I'm not sure you can judge his younger self by what we had previously seen of Kirk, anyway. Sure, he had mellowed into a bit more decorum and professionalism by the time he was in his 30s in TOS, but we never saw him in the academy, and it's not entirely implausible that he'd be a little rougher around the edges with his arrogance and manners.

Re: Star Trek DVD Out Today

Surely not quite that

You know what, that wasn't even "rougher around the edges". That was an entirely different set of "arrogance and manners". And it may have worked movie-wise, but for me it was just a bit of eye-rolling.

The listing of a "font consultant" or whatever at the end of the credits tickled me, though.

Yeah. Old Kirk was what- 33 or 34 when he became Captain, not 25. And Old Kirk came up the ranks, Louie, first officer (probably), then Captain. He wasn't like NuKirk who went from cadet to Captain before he cashed his first Starfleet paycheck.

I've thought about this a lot.

Kirk wanted to make it obvious that he was "cheating" because he was, in reality, protesting the Kobayahi Maru itself.

If he had beaten it, and it hadn't been obvious that he had changed the terms, his actions would have been indefensible.
