So it looks like it might be a reboot. Fuck.

I'm glad they tried to make it look like it actually fits in with Starfleet ships between the NX-01 and and 'present day' Trek, but I don't really like the way it looks. I don't like the weird antennae on the nacelles, and I don't like the four indentations around the circumference of the saucer section. Even if those minor details were taken away, it would look just like the 1701-E with stupid bubble nacelles.

Those are an original feature of the Enterprise design.

I'm gonna go with an April Fools for the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with a design like that, since it looks like (except for the struts) if you added extra hull plating over the whole thing it would have basically the same shapes as the original 1701.

You're, uh, right and wrong. I know both the 1701 has appeared onscreen with the, uh, headlights, both on and off. In fact, I think "Off" was the pretty standard position.

The nipple things appeared originally, and I think appeared on the first pilot and a bunch of miscellaneous stock footage effects. The one without came later, IIRC.

I'm pretty sure that was discussed in the Reeves-Stevens' "The Art of Star Trek."

Also, my vote is that while this is actual production artwork, it's pretty far from what we'll see. What I find interesting is the "-S" after the note - is Sternbach Back?

Assuming this isn't an April Fool:

The "plateless-to-plated" transition this is supposed to suggest might actually be what the illustrator is going for. Doesn't explain why the 1701 went back to having all this stuff on top of the plates in TMP, though, if that's the case. Beyond that, I can't fucking think because I think the roommate's pig noises are going to make me fucking vom if I don't put some earplugs in and bash my timpanic nerves with Nine Inch Nails, which will keep me from thinking also, but also keep me from puking up last night's dinner.
