Another success by Ancalagon. surely Caboose is in the axis of evil with Visionrazor, Dayton, and Garamet.
Does anyone know whether I'm still part of the Axis of Evil? 'cause it's really funny watching Capt. Psyops trying to manage gturner. Apparently he considers him a valuable poster.
Not really. I don't remember much except that he was one of the founding members and I rarely saw him say boo about board drama. I dropped him a line after Anc sold his ownership, but I haven't heard anything.
It is amazing how many forums have threads declaring it just isn't the same or asking where everyone went. They even have one over at CFC.
Forums used to be a place where you could shoot the shit. Now Facebook has taken over that role, while also feeding some latent narcissism. You get to chat, have it revolve around you, and open up the discussion to the rest of the world instantly. No forum, no matter how large or popular, can really compete with that.
This. Unlike message boards, social media pretty much allows you to write your own narrative, where you're the star/hero of the show. I'm surprised Dayton hasn't embraced Facebook and left message boards behind forever. Oh, yeah. That whole "being sociable" thing kinda rules that out.
I see nothing wrong with missing people and wondering why these people who we used to consider a kind of family are no longer participating with us.
Fora are social media, but as you say, the center is shifted now. I have so many ideas on this that I can't spit them all out right now (none of them fully formed anyway). What I have also noticed is that a large percentage of people will sign up for whatever comes in front of them--and even pay for it. I like to think that people are generally discerning and careful, but then I look at what paid apps are popular, or what startups are getting people to pay for services, and I despair. More on this later. I think there is a way to have both worlds, but do people really want it, or do they want disposable communication?
Don't forget the new home of drive-by trollery, Twatter. With a 140 characters you can not only piss off thousands, but they'll retweet the fucking thing in disgust thus driving up the shits and giggles level of said troll. For me FB isn't as good as a board as points get drowned, and there are far too many fruitcakes.
Twitter depends entirely on how you use it; subscriptions are up to you. My stream is 95% worthwhile, and incidentally, about 75% of those tweets link to longer stuff.
Yep. The forum I run has a FB page and a Twitter page, but they're only used to show updates, or to explain maintenance issues. All of the content takes place on the forum itself.
It's to bad WF doesn't have an official WF page. I know i know, there's the secret invite only one but not all of us can join. The owners would do well to make it official and open to all.
