Takei should be flattered. The actor is so strongly identified with the character, that the character is taking on the actor's attributes.

As for "Roddenberry's vision," I don't think Sulu's sexuality came up all that often. The only instance that comes to mind is Mirror-Sulu hitting on Uhura. But that's in a universe where everyone's opposite, so naturally Mirror-Sulu would be a pussy hound.
