There's a reason all of the AT&T buildings around here are the left-over windowless, reinforced buildings from the Bell era. Telecommunications is a National Security issue. One person, or a small group of persons, shut down 911 service for nearly 1/3rd of the State of Tennessee for hours.

If it had happened in five cities, simultaneously, it would have crippled the whole region.

    But, infrastructure isn't important, right?

The sophistication and concern few get hurt seem like leftist hallmarks.

    Has anyone heard from Amaris?

They also had another strategy whereby a second device would be set up to target emergency services responding to the first.

Another was to inform authorities in advance of punishment beatings which were due to be meted out, but make it clear no response would be allowed near until a certain time period had passed after the fact, not only impressing the power they wielded but making the wait for assistance part of the assigned punishment.

Another fun one was to send operatives into hospitals to further harm those recovering from attacks. Forcibly undoing surgery was a favourite, along with filming it to show relatives and/or those deemed in need of keeping in line.

All depends which iteration of the IRA, the prevailing political winds of the time, the motivation for the attack, recent relations with authorities.

    Sorry.

It just amazes me at times the extent to which history seems to want to minimise the Troubles which, had we been more honest in our spin, would have been called a civil war.

yes The Troubles were bad but to call it a civil war? God forbid the US has an actual holy shit civil war but if it does....the sheer amount of firepower from many millions of guns - and our large spread-out and diverse population - would make The Troubles look like a Care Bears picnic. Even sending in UN forces trying to put a stop to it would end in a complete bloodbath. That said, I think we have a second civil war thread already so I won't tie up this thread. I really wonder who is behind this RV bomb though, as does everybody.

You had several factions vying for control of a portion of the country, with the government at times ceding any pretence of civilian control. Military and paramilitary forces and tactics were the norm. In many ways parts of NI were effectively enemy territory for the troops deployed there. Yes, it was absolutely a civil war. Limited in material scope, but war nonetheless.

So why would you make this a contest?

No one here, AFAIK, actually wants such a fate for the US, NI could and should serve as a warning to those who do.

However calling the IRA simply a terrorist organisation is to overlook how large, well trained, organised and supported they were, not to mention they were more than willing and able to take the field directly against regular military forces and for all sides the nomenclature for the deployment of those troops was "the occupation".

Well, my phone has lost the ability to connect to the internet and my home service has yet to be restored. I’ve had to walk into town to find a hotspot and about half the ones I’ve tried haven’t worked. The one I’m currently connected to is a bit unstable.

I'm not making this a contest. No doubt the IRA was more than a rinky-dink terrorist outfit. But unless Ireland's military is very small I can't see how the IRA couldn't have been demolished with a quickness if they wanted to do so.
That said limiting civilian casualties would be very difficult in The Troubles for a uniformed military force. And telling IRA member from average citizen would be hard too. Yes I see your point - it was a war, but a very long drawn out war - kind of Britain's own Afghanistan but on a smaller scale.

That said a US civil war would be apples & oranges to Ireland. Geography, terrain, logistics, metropolitan centers comprised of millions of people, etc etc are incredibly varied & complicated.
And yes the IRA was armed but America has an unbelievable amount of firepower in the homes of it's citizens for whichever factions might form, and many millions of very experienced shooters. Just our population of disgruntled but still young enough to effectively fight military vets make up a very sizable force. It would be a constantly escalating bloodbath for all involved on a massive scale.
Americans have a habit of going overboard and not doing anything half-assed so factor that in too. Hopefully war will never happen.

I've heard bits & pieces about Lin Wood but only recently. If memory serves he is a lawyer - but he doesn't seem to act very "lawyerly" compared to all the lawyers I've had dealings with.
Then again I've only dealt with stay under the radar defense lawyers.

Maybe that was the whole design of the attack. It was meant to take out WF moderation. Some of the people who bitch about it tend to be a little unstable? Has anyone seen el chup lately?

I doubt areas of lower popula5tion density like TN would have lots of redundant coverage for civilian communications. Technically that is the purpose of the internet, but that sort of connectivity across new technologies like wireless communications is probably way to expensive to have been implemented in lower revenue areas of lighter population. I get Nashville is a big city, but you have to get the data there via trunks and possibly sattelite. They may noit have redundant HS trunks because an outage is simply less costly when you are dealing with civilians.

I remember dealing with multiple systems in NY right outside of the city and if you took out one trunk you would down entire areas because there was not the redundancy built in that is needed to rerout the data. Ore if there is a backup trunk it was so small it would just trickle data at rates of a decade ago which does not do fuck for modern browsing when media just eats up so much more data because it is there.

It is one of those things commercial development is not going to spend the extra money on redundancy for the occasional outage for people who are viewing porn and might have to wait a day or two to spank again. If you want something to actually spend on redundancy like that you are not going to get it with companies who are not harmed by outages like this. It just cuts toio deeply into corporate profits for something that only is a problem once in a while.

THIS JUST IN! Check out some news sources - a "person of interest" is being investigated! That means pretty much everyone on wordforge is off the hook - not too many interesting people. :(
That said they better not jump into this "person of interest" too quickly. Look what happened with Richard Jewell after the Atlanta Olympics debacle.
