DAMN! A whole documentary about the making of Steely Dan's "Aja" classic. You will not be able to stop watching this. [YT="Making of Aja Album"]B8GwEX7nn6o[/YT]
What's funny about this - it shows me how music works on a subconscious level. In other words, sometimes there is an "X" factor in music that you can't describe, but can't deny, but you don't really know why. Then you see a show like this and you see the details of why the music sounds like it does, and you hear it again as if for the first time. But music that is not multidimensional doesn't have many layers of perfection and talent to sink your teeth into.
Yeah, that's a series from VH1 Classic. Saw that episode several years ago. There are some really good ones but that may be the best.
They put so much detail into that album that I never even noticed you til I watched that. Mike McDonald is singing some background lines in "Peg" that you can't even understand because of the mix. Most people would have just had him sing "oooh" or "aaah", but they wrote specific lyrics for him to sing that nobody would ever understand.. That's attention to detail that you don't see anymore.
That drummer (older black guy) was laying down some INSANE shit. I could listen to him all day just by himself. I listened to the whole Aja album again with even more appreciation.
