Season finale and season 1 in the bag.

Kind of finished on the same note it started, more or less. No real surprises except Raffi and Seven getting cozy at the end. What a waste.

    No cliffhanger- loved that part.

Seven / Narissa (?) catfight to the death- REALLY loved that part.

Hopefully, we haven't heard the last from Tamlyn Tomita and Commodore Oh. How is it that Riker just casually doesn't address the fact that the Romulan fleet commander is the Starfleet head of security, and a flag officer? Think it might be pertinent that Starfleet security has been run by the Tal Shiar for the last however many years? I mean WTF, Starfleet!!!

We did get to see Data a final time, in a way. Very touching moments, there. The death scene for JL was a bit nerfed by seeing what was coming about three episodes back. Which leads me to my one rolleyes moment:

JL gets reborn into a shiny, new synthetic golem. Except no enhanced abilities. Oh, and it looks decrepit. And programmed like a Replicant so that Picard is still in his 90's and gonna die soon. I get it- we want Stewart to play Picard, and for him not to become some weird Picard / Data hybrid. But really?

For future reference: If any of you move my old, dead, fat ass into a shiny synthetic golem, please make it young, ripped, devastatingly handsome, full superpowers, big dick, and immortal- the deluxe package, please. That's how you roll if 'you don't want the game to end.'

Solid first season. Now they are a ship of misfits. We'll see where they go and who they tangle with next. And I guess you can get away with murder, Dr. Jurati. Maybe instead of 'plot armor', we call it 'plot immunity.'

I feel like somebody wanted to try and say something profound and wanted a classic Picard speech, but just couldn't quite stick the landing.

Data given a "proper burial" shall we say, was acceptable and gives me closure of the TNG movies and that character. Thank you for that.

Picard dying, come on. No one's ever really gone.

What was the point of the Borg cube story?

What was the point/what happened with Raffi being an an addict and her son story line? Seems kind of unnecessary.

In fact, most of this show was unnecessary and either should have had a few more episodes to flesh it all out or they should have reduced it and just focused on one clear cut story.

All of the sudden Narek's sister loves him and is happy to see him?

There's no way you'd see the other planets in that system.

No security on the Borg cube. Nobody saw Narek, wasn't Seven and Elnor sitting right there?

    NuBSG music vibes.

Data was given a chance to live so I guess the main gripe is the synth ban which it really never got answered where those workers came from.

What's with the AI end of the world obsession?

    Here comes the 1,000 ships!

Here's 1,000 more ships! With no registries BTW and they're all the same class.

Romulans backed down pretty easy there considering they've been after synths for thousands of years.

Here comes 1,000 more ships that are apparently Chitauri from The Avengers. Good thing Soji shut things down in time.

Good thing Riker showed up at the nick of time. Okay I was wrong about my prediction, I thought Seven would fire up the cube and save the day.

I love how Elnor keeps telling Narek that he doesn't like him. That's alright Elnor, we don't like you either.

That's about all I got. It wasn't horrible. Acceptable send off for Data. No foreseeable consequences for Jurati or Seven for that matter. Lots of sort off unanswered questions as expected.

    Damn I hate being right.

About the only thing worth a shit in that episode was seeing Riker in the captain's chair.

    The rest... meh.

Usually, a Federation fleet that frakkin' huge would have an admiral in command, and said admiral would speak for the fleet and the Federation. Jest sayin'... :?:

So... that was end of season 1.

So yeah, pretty much knew that Picard wouldn't stay dead, the whole "Picard in and android body" was telegraphed not exactly by the episode itself, but it was still there, but by knowing that two more seasons had been green lighted and Stewart had announced that the whole crew was back for season 2. Which also telegraphed that Soji would not go through with "Exterminate all humans, and others".

So if I hadn't known that, then the episode would have been more suspenseful. Loved seeing Narissa get her ass kicked and handed to her by Seven, I cheered when Seven kicked her off the platform and said "This is for Hugh". Also was great to see Riker back, having a sense of humor during and after the standoff with the Romulan commander, general, or whatever she is was awesome. It matched well with the humor he showed earlier in the series.

If it wasn't for knowing ahead of time that Picard would be back, I really was expecting the see Altan take the body that was being built. And also found that to be the only real week part of the series and ending. Having Picard living in an android body. That just seems a bit of a stretch to me, and I think would have real ramifications then and later on. Is he the real Picard anymore, or just a copy of Picard. I was expecting the handheld fic it all to fix Picard, that Jaroti would use that to cure Picard.

I did find myself pausing the episode where Riker appeared to see if it was near the end of the episode, mainly because I was into each episode that they seemed shorter than almost an hour long. And speaking of Riker appearing, having each ship the same class was kind of stupid. It would have worked much better if there were several different classes of ships in the armada that appeared.

I really did like that Data was given closure that was a much better than he was in Nemesis. This gave Data a proper ending and goodbye, I'd have to say that in the end he finally became human and that he saw Picard as his father when he "died" at the end of the episode. He finally got his wish to be human.

Overall, still really enjoyed the season and still enjoyed that season finale.

Mostly ok with this episode. Some unforced weaknesses:

They tried really hard to justify the Picard resurrection by interlacing it with Data's quest for mortality, but it didn't quite work for me. If you want him to survive -- and so do I; I'm looking forward to season 2! -- just let him survive. Syndrome threatens his life, but he pulls through.

The ubersynths coming through a Lovecraftian hole in the sky. The beacon was supposed to be a signal, not a portal opener. Once they know there's something there, they should be coming.

Why is the beacon so difficult and complicated to use? Why would Soji be in charge of it? Where does the rest of the android village go to once our B-class heroes punch a few of them?

The fight between Seven and Romulan sister was gratuitous.

It's hard to believe whole fleets would just go away like that, or that Riker would command one, or that the Starfleet one would consist of just one type of ship. Rewrite this such that both fleets consist of smaller details, 3-5 ships each. That's enough to kill planets in this universe -- we've seen it before -- and suddenly it also makes a bit more sense for Picard to hold them up with one smaller ship, for a short while.

But mostly I'm satisfied. Now I hope that they will be able to deliver as good a season 2 without Chabon.

satisfying episode with a lot of moments I liked - more in another post on that - and a few places I was bothered (the threat from the portal seemed cheesy as fuck, not at all what I would have expected for one)...mainly

    Anyway...
other than the minor funbles I thought this script was pretty tight, with a lot of "classic" touches and in particular Jurati shined in this episode, IMO

Because I love Star Trek, warts and all. I like discussing it for the good and the bad. I've stuck with every series and because it's Picard I give it a chance. Who knows, maybe it'll get better. Star Trek was my first love in science fiction other than Quantum Leap. Unfortunately nothing has happened with Quantum Leap since 1995. So I watch each show and criticize them, discuss them. I like to do it so I do. That's all the reason you should need. I'm not actively looking for things to hate, but I know who's behind these shows and they've proven time and time again that they are bad writers so yeah, I'm keeping my eye on them. I love Star Trek so I watch. As for hobbies, I have mine and I have other, better shows that I watch. As for getting laid, nice cliche, but I get mine when I can.

So they just left the cube and all the XBs there with no leader? A short walk away from the synth colony?

    What happened to Narek?

How long until he see Narek's obviously not dead sister again? This show isn't afraid to decapitate someone onscreen. Since we didn't see her hit the ground, she's still alive.

Is the "real" Picard dead now, while the rest of the crew is playing around with a copy?

That portal looks suspiciously like the one Michael Burnham disappeared into. Could be a beacon in time?

Also, is Picard's consciousness in a synthetic body that big of a jump from Airiam's existence?

Don't believed they specified about Narek but I'm pretty sure Seven said all the XBs (except her) were dead.

I'd assume the Federation will clean up the remnants of the cube.

Soon as I saw Frakes' name in the opening credits, I knew how he was going to show up. That line about still being reserve a few episodes back telegraphed it nicely.

The resolution with synthetic Picard is a little too pat for my taste.

Goodbye, hot Romulan chick. :j:

The finale was pretty good and it gave Picard a noble (near) death. Nice that we got an ending for Data as well.

On the whole, I've like this series very much. I'm giving the first season a B+.

So you get a new synthetic body, but it's just as aged and decrepit as the 94-year-old one you abandoned?

Why not take the opportunity to give Patrick Stewart his exit? Dude's old and tired as fuck. Get Tom Hardy or whomever to play Picard in his new body for the next season.

Corruption and alien influence at the highest levels of Starfleet has become so routine in the Trek universe, the characters don't think anything of it anymore.

Riker's appearance at the end made little sense and was just for fan gratuity. An armada of that size would have an active-duty flag officer in command, as usual.

Just binged the last three episodes.

    Lot's of problems.

Did the writers not watch First Contact? Did they miss the part where Borg were happily walking outside of Enterprise's hull without space suits while fucking up the ship? Why can't Seven just beam them back in? The cube is huge. Certainly she can do that and since the Romulans left it should be easy to just move the cube around and do it.

Of course in the entire Milky Way galaxy Rios knows who former Soji (Jana). And that's on the top of the amazing coincidence that Nareek just happened to be at the correct Borg conduit to follow Rios ship. And that's also on top of the amazing coincidence that Narrek and his sister also have an Auntie who was in the Vat Zash or however you spell it.

I have to wonder if Nareek's sister killed the Romulan XB's and her aunt? We don't know if she did. We can assume it but given it was her aunt that question is up in the air.

    Such lazy writing.

The robots from the end of space looked more like machines from Terminator Salvation. The ones in the water that grabbed the helicopter pilot.

Which makes no sense since the Federation should be at least 24 hours behind the curve. It took them time to get Picards message, gather a fleet, pick up Riker and head for the location. No way he gets there on time.

Narek wasn't killed. But we also don't know what happened to him. The Romulans left too fast to have picked him up.

Seven didn't say all the XB's were dead. There were plenty of live ones in that Borg cube on the planet.

Which the show left behind and didn't answer anything about.

Picards death was meh because their was no way they would kill Picard. So you know he had to have that "golem" that Dr. Soong was making. Dr. Soong was bit of a douche. I didn't think he was Lore but I'd bet Papa Soong based Lore off of the son which why Lore was also a douche.

Also more lazy writing that Soong just happens to have a son that no one knows about in the Federation.

Jurati gets away with murder because they can put it on Commander Oh's treachery and that Jurati was forced into it. Of course the show never shows us this because maybe they go to Starbase 12 next season? ;)

That was my first thought as well.

I have to disagree here. Star Fleet got it's ass handed to it by the Borg twice with only the Enterprise saving the day AND had a few years later fought a massive war against the Dominion. I'd say after all that Star Fleet and the Federation had changed and it realized that it need a fleet for defense. One ship design built in the hundreds or thousands is much more efficient. Imagine how the war would have gone with the Dominion if Star Fleet had had hundreds or thousands of Sovereign class warships like the Enterprise E. A lot of Star Fleets ships during the war were old obsolete ships still serving from Kirk's time. (Excelsior class in particular)

You can still have other types of ships for other duties but for fighting ships one class of ship if it's powerful is good enough in space.

Exactly. That was the entire message from the ubersynths. Call them and they will show up and kick organic ass.

Was Soji turning off the beacon the equivalent of a wrong number? "Oops wrong number" grumble "okay everyone back in the hole"

Plus I was actually hoping that the ubersynths would show up and say, "Look a couple hundred thousand years ago we left that message because we were angry. We aren't like that anymore. Peace everyone."

And if they are watching everything why do they need a beacon? Can't they just show up on their own?

I think they went to lunch. They also took Nareek with them.

I was hoping it would break out into a porn scene.

It would have been awesome if Admiral Clancy had shown up just to tell Picard, "PICARD, SHUT THE FUCK UP!"

I'll keep this short and sweet -- Star Trek Picard is a mess. It has some enjoyable moments, especially in this finale. But overall the story was all over the place. And how easily has it become in the 24th Century to commit blatant murder (Agness offing Maddox) and no one blinks an eye. And Elnor has become the Ensign Harry Kim of Picard -- totally useless character who had no reason to be in the show whatsoever.

Picard and Data's final moments were awesome, but Picard now a synth is a bit eye rolling. I never really liked any of the other characters like Rios and Raffi, but Jeri Ryan has never been better playing this older version of Anika. It was cool to see her join the crew at the end, so I hope she stays on as a regular next season.

Speaking of which, they completely wrapped up the story, so where in the hell is this show gonna go from here? Another disaster from which robot Picard and his new shipmates need to save the universe?

The positives for this show is that it had great acting (unlike most of Berman/Braga Trek) and great production values. But story-wise it was a mediocre show, and I find Discovery to be a lot more fun. I'll give the second season a chance when it comes out next year (if we're all still alive by then), but they need to find their direction and stick with it.

I enjoy this series, but this finale...had a lot going for it, and not in a good way. There's only so far that "At least Berman isn't at the helm" will carry it moving forward.

With that said, Data's send-off was 18 years overdue and I'm glad the writers got that right.

So....is Jurati gonna face any time for murder, or....?

Elnor is so pretty to look at, but he's getting to be a bigger cutout character than Mayweather :(

I guess Seven is gay after all and we're in no danger of a C/7 reunion even if Robert Beltran were inclined to return to the franchise.

I hope Raffi is able to reunite with her kid next season

    That's all I got.

There is no way Jurati faces time for murder.

Star Fleet has massive egg on its face. It let a Romulan agent work her way up the ladder to be the head of Star Fleet Security. Commodore Oh is going to take the blame for everything. They are going to say she brainwashed Jurati into killing Maddox and let Jurati off the hook. Just like Commodore Oh is responsible for Rios former captain killing those two synths and himself.

Star Fleet is going to be busy sweeping this whole thing under the rug.

I'm not seeing any reason for Jurati to stay aboard for S2 though, unless she's assigned herself to Soji to study how the bio-synths work or Picard's new bod needs occasional maintenance? Or just hanging around for Rios?

That said, can't see why the crew need to stay together at all, beyond "we've formed a new family" schmaltz. Yes, they've helped pick each other back up. Are they intending to move on at all now they're back on their feet?

Following Hugh's mission of helping the xBs might need some travel if there are other communities of them. I could see Agnes being useful there. Why would Raffi hang about though? Loyalty to Picard or because she's looking for surrogate family after her own rejected her? (She's been playing the mother role for Agnes and Elnor since getting back from Freecloud). Or perhaps Seven really is that "efficient"? Vajazzle sure seemed regretful their relationship had gone south... ;)

Picard getting a new synth body that's matched to his age allows them to use the ol' "we'll never speak of this again" maneuver: something very significant has happened to the character, but in a way that leaves them unchanged from what they were before. The toys are back in the toybox.

Elron had no arc and, other than a couple of action beats that could've easily been written around, served no purpose in the story. I think they should jettison him and replace him with another character. It would have to be a different actor, but a good replacement for him would be Worf's son, Alexander.

Agreed that there wasn't nearly enough time for Starfleet to marshal 100 ships and get them to Exogol (forgot the actual name) in time to stop the Romulans. Still, awesome to see Riker in command.

Well, they WERE all identical ships. Are we sure Riker doesn't just know Picard well enough to think up the same strategy and create multiple holoimages? Sure, Picard needed Jurati and the synth doohickey, but Riker has a full starship at his disposal...

Well, she was brainwashed by the Admonition. Federation citizens sometimes kill people while possessed by alien entities; it has been happening a lot in previous decades as well. Worse things happen in space, you know.

a good portion of the neutral zone is within two sectors of Earth and there are a lot of inhabited systems between oo1 and the asteroid field formerly known as Romulus-which was also only two sectors distant from Earth. I'm not having so much trouble believing star fleet could muster 100+ ships in a day so much as the Romulan remnant even posessing the same.
