Defund the Police

I take your point, there's an element of "told you so" in certain quarters.

Here's my suggestion, try seeing beyond whether people are "liberals" or "conservatives" and looking at it from the point of view of the protesters who aren't supporting a "side", but just want to put their experiences to the world.

I can see why they might want to abolish the police because to them the police are the people who hassle them, abuse them, beat them, kill their children and then criminalise objections. You see defenders of law and order, they see someone to fear and loathe yet both come from your different experiences.

No, I don't think you should be eliminating police forces altogether, but nor do I think this can be solved in house because both perspectives are true and the American police are genuinely much too aggressive and much too like a military arguably more aggressive than the military themselves would be in their place.

When I was over there I found the police (and pretty much anyone else in uniform) to be rude and bullying in their manner, quite the opposite to what I am used to hear where officials tend to be extremely polite and non threatening. That in itself isn't cause for uprising, but it did illustrate just how different how prior expectations colour the way we see things in the here and now.

UK police are much less likely to give an order or make a demand of the public, they are more likely to engage in community work and actively form relationships with the public.They will ask politely before they shout, look for mutual cooperation before compliance, de escalate rather than overwhelm with force. When presented with such a harsh contrast I did indeed feel intimidated at times, there's a sense of being somehow a criminal by default and seemingly black people are indeed viewed in that way.

Agree! Soundbites & slogans just state the obvious - they don't solve anything. Both sides (all sides) do it and for very complicated matters it's just a distraction - it's a "fallback" position.

There is only no hope for dialogue when we give up hoping for dialogue. Most people on both sides are not extremists and do want dialogue but they want meaningful dialogue....not a one sided monologue. But that's often what it becomes when people refuse to really listen.

This. The time for talk has passed. For decades black people have been told "patience," and yet nothing has been done. If anything, once the 1994 crime bill was passed into law, the situation became much worse, and so now black people are being told "patience" again, for something that has grown worse and not better, and they're expected to have that patience until the whims of a privileged class of people decide that maybe now will be the time, and so black people (and allies) are saying "time's up."

Which is what you point out enumerating all the reasons why the police can't come out against murderous cops. They can't come to a dialogue, you say; I see that they won't; either way, there's no dialogue.

Perhaps you should stop being a racist. That might help. It would certainlyu make it harder to point out your racism if you did not constantly spit out racist things. Tererun you are the only person who calls me a racist on a daily basis. You have never (despite my constant asking) stepped up to the plate and provided one iota of proof that I have ever posited that one race is superior over another, or should be awarded special treatment.
What I have done is provided statistics and facts and news articles about various thread topics that you feel paints blacks in a negative light. This might offend you, but that still fails the racism test six ways from sunday.

Ironically you yourself have posited that whites (specifically white conservative males) are inferior, cowardly, inherently evil and are the cause of much of the nation's suffering. This seems strongly contradictory to accusing me of being a racist.

I am not going to stop fighting against racism because you find it makes you sad that you are called out on being a racist. but you can see the logic how public funds might better be spent on women like that (well, not ufc pros, but with a few years of krav maga or whatever three times a week) with several years of education vs a semester and a half of basic cop stuff?Especially dealing with addicts and mentallyunstable homeless.

My buddy the mall cop supervisor has a 3 year diploma in Law and Security, qualified first aider/responder, and is working on a brown belt. Far more capable of dealing with small crimes than a cop, at half the salary...

I think American police would be smart to start following the British model. I'd like to read any objections (from a conservative or liberal perspective) as to why it wouldn't work. I'm not even saying American cops should lose their guns--just follow the British model described above. What would be wrong with that?

I'm for demilitarizing the police, especially smaller towns and cities that don't need armored vehicles and SWAT teams.

Police uniforms should look more like ADAM-12 and less like Navy SEALS.

Training and standards need to be improved across the board. Most police departments have abysmal training and tactics. LAPD and/or NYPD training ought to be the standard everywhere.

Mandatory psych screening at entry level. Weed out the Cartmans, abused children, and bullies before Day 1 or a single penny spent.

Lastly, mandatory body cams for all police. Protects the cops, protects the citizens. Video doesn't lie.

The biggest racists tend to be the ones that use the race card the most. They are like the closeted gay people who always bash gays. I also think that since Oldfella is being called a racist, then the accuser should have no problem providing examples. Otherwise, shut up.
