Today is 38 years since the Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion 73 seconds into the launch on January 28th 1986. The astronauts killed onboard were F. Richard Scobee, Commander Michael J. Smith, Pilot Ronald McNair, Mission Specialist Ellison Onizuka, Mission Specialist Judith Resnik, Mission Specialist Gregory Jarvis, Payload Specialist Christa McAuliffe, Payload Specialist, teacher Nichelle Nichols felt extreme guilt for years after the death of Ronald McNair. She recruited McNair in 1978 as part of a NASA program to increase the number of minorities and women into the space program. Also Ellison Onizuka and Judith Resnick were also recruited as part of the same program
IMNSHO, NASA's urgency to push, push, push, go, go, go came straight down from the Reagan administration wanting to use the shuttle program for political football. 7 more cadavers for Ronnie's pile.
Nixon’s. He forced budget cuts and changes to the design for the shuttles, then made NASA lie about the costs. We were told that the shuttles were going to be launching weekly and that space flight was going to be so cheap that all of us could go. In reality, they couldn’t even launch them monthly. But we’re America and we can’t let those Ruskies win! We had to do something that they had never done, like send an ordinary citizen into space.
Is there nothing bad between 1981 and 1989 that *isn't* that man's fault? He's got to be the worst President in our entire history and considering I lived through Trump and Bush, that's saying a lot.
The news covered him like he was British royalty, or the weather, And for satire, we didn't get a John Stewart or an Onion. We got "Hahaa!! He's old!! Hahaa!! He eats jellybeans!! Hahaa!! He calls his wife "mommy" ". Thanks, boomers.
That was a sort of thing for people of that generation and whiteness. One set of my grandparents called themselves brother and sis. After watching The People under the Stairs and noticing a uncanny similarity between the couple in the movie and that set of grandparents we actually had to ask. The answer was no, but I really do still wonder a bit to this day.
