And this morning I got a lesson in why it'd be beneficial to have a 3D Printer. I took a nasty spill and absolutely twisted the fuck out of my ankle. I got a friend to give me a lift to the store and bought the best ankle brace they had. It helps, but its not a perfect solution. If I had a 3D printer, I could print out a brace which not only gave me support, but allowed me to shift the pressure points of my foot to places that don't hurt. I'd probably need to print out an elevated shoe for my other foot as well, but in the end, I'd be able to get around without the use of crutches or being in pain when I walk.

Meet the first all metal, 3D printed gun. Video of it being test fired at the link. (I had no idea that they were using inconel in 3D printers. That's some tough shit.)
Thanks for this repository of 3D printer news. Its such a fascinating technology which I believe will revolutionize manufacturing, among other sectors. I keep telling as many people as possible about it, it's just that incredible, IMO.
In "My Favorite Martian", Ray Walston's spaceship was missing one vital part, and it was the part that self-repaired the whole rest of the ship. Now we know what it was! A little 3-D metal printer!
Wow! Shit just got real. I didn't think 3D printed guns would reach this level of sophistication so quickly. You'd be hard-pressed to tell that 3D printed 1911 from one of the many 1911s on the market today.
Adjusting for inflation, an Apple II cost just over $9K in 2013 dollars. For $10K, next year, you'll be able to buy a metal 3D printer.
And per this article, we're about to see a $100 3D printer. http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox...rms_3d_printing_and_programming_for_kids.html Oh, and if you like Legos, there are instructions for building a 3D printer from them.
Google uses a 3D printer to make pasta. Alton Brown's a big fan of having a 3D printer in the kitchen. The guys at Cornell have even 3D printed spaceships made of scallops. One expert is even predicting that 3D printers will eliminate the need for animal testing in as little as 5 years.
NASA looks at printing out lunar bases. Article talking about his 3D printed house that can be built in 24 hours.
Another desktop metal 3D printer is in the works. Interestingly enough, some of the parts for the original prototype were made by a Makerbot plastic 3D printer.

Significantly faster 3D printers developed. Print your own dinosaur skeleton! Kele Okereke to release vinyl single made on a 3D printer Multi-function 3D printer.
I wonder how long before traditional shipbuilding is usurped by gigantic 3d printers hundreds of meters long capable of printing out entire ships weighing hundreds of thousands of tons, in a week or so.
Not exactly 3D printing, but a company has developed a method to produce OLED screens using modified inkjet printers. Another, not-quite-3D-printing story about a handheld router which uses a computer to control where it cuts.
3D printed house (some assembly required). Researchers want to make 3D printed hearts available in 10 years. I've seen videos of people printing out frog hearts, so its certainly possible that they could accomplish this in 10 years. Getting FDA approval might take longer, though.
They've now put 500 rounds through that 3D printed 1911. And Philadelphia becomes the first city to ban them.
Researchers at the University of Liverpool are working on developing 3D printed skin. After all, we can't have our Terminator T-800's running around naked, now can we?
