Okay, my son has a mountain bike. It needs a front tire, as in front tire is missing, so I can't get the specs off the actual tire. Every place he checks sells them for 200 dollars or so, maybe 150. Ummm......the whole bike costs 350. Does this make sense? Anyway, if anyone knows anything about bike tires, the rear tire says 52-622 29x2.1 so I guess the front would be the same.
Typically, the front would be the same, and it should not cost anywhere near that figure. Does he still have the rim? If not, that would bump the replacement cost up significantly.

That's why he's looking at a big hit on price. Rims are expensive. Most bike shops have some used options. I recommend going to a bike shop and explaining that you don't wish to spend much, then ask them to find a solution. They want you to spend $200, but should also be able to get you something for $100, which is still a better sale than none.
Thanks! There is an actual brick and mortar bike store a couple of miles away. I will check them out.
My assumption is that youngfella1962 didn't lock the front tire and somebody took advantage of the quick release lever.
No, he took the tire off to put the bike in his trunk. He forgot to put the tire in, and when he got back to his barracks he realized he had forgotten to put the tire in. He has memory difficulties, not unlike myself.
See? That's a story. (Btw, everybody has those kinds of memory lapses. Don't pathologize being human.)
He recently underwent a hospital cognitive exam because of his constant short term memory loss + learning difficulties. He failed - minimum is 26, he barely broke 20. BTW did you know there are two general kinds of memory? Semantic and episodic. Semantic is exact details - like somebody tells you a phone number and you can dial it five seconds later without having to write it down. Episodic is your first day of Kindergarten, or something seemingly random that somebody said twenty years ago in passing, or which band you don't even listen to sang a song you heard once but you remember 40 years later. BTW never play Trivial Pursuit with me - my episodic memory is off the scale and you will get your ass handed to you, just don't ask me to do even simple math in my head or a sequence of events in a task - then I get my ass handed right back to me gift-wrapped. Anyway, getting off topic but the human brain is a most amazing and varied mechanism indeed!
Ok, I'm sorry to hear that then. The bike thing alone sounded very common to me. I've left things all over the place, especially cars, wallets, and suitcases.
So I'm calling up the bike shop tomorrow and seeing what they say. If anything I'll pick their brains so I know a little about bike tires in general - that way if my son orders one online he'll get the right tread/design/etc.
Did it work? You're looking for a 29-inch front wheel and a 2.1-inch tire. If the bike only cost $350, it probably needs a standard quickrelease and not a through-axle. Tread is up to you, might as well get something similar to the rear. Does it have a disc or rim brake in the front? It may or may not be the same as the back.
Whoa! Now we're getting complicated. I will bring a detailed bike description to the bike shop to see what I need.
