So, what you're saying is that there's nothing left to burn in your country. Otherwise, it'd be warmer.
Unfortunately not. It's been a very wet spring and summer, which means there is a lot of fresh growth around the country just waiting for warm weather to dry it out.
it's been late in coming to TOronto this year. I don't think we've gotten a foot worth in the three or four brief snowfalls we've had. Twelve below, according to the toolbar, -26 with the windchill factor though. Gonna be some deaths tonight Only a dusting of snow that'll be gone by Sunday when it's supposed to warm back up to around 0.
You know why we need UHC in this country? Because at least two of these people are going to need mental health treatment through no fault of their own. Oregon teen saves baby after seeing three die slipping on ice into power line
Oh, y'all wanna hear about how I thought I might die because of this cold snap? Tough. I'm going to tell you anyway. I get up early to get some kerosene for my heater, and as I'm heading out of the trailer park, I see a very large cloud of smoke. No idea of where it's coming from, or what it might mean. As I get closer, I discover that it's coming from the front of the trailer park. Now, the park I live in is located in a low part compared to the rest of the area around me. At the entrance to the trailer park, there's a gas station, which is actually a two-story building. People driving on the main road can only see the top of the building, which is a convenience store, while the office of the landlord is located on the bottom floor. Because of the terrain and the cars parked in the area, it takes me a moment or two before I can see that the fire is coming from the trailer next to the landlord's office. Prior to that, I had no idea if it was coming from the gas station or somewhere across the street. Here's where it starts to get "fun." I see that the trailer is on fire, I also notice that there's a propane gas tank for a gas grill near the trailer. When I say "near" I mean less than 20 feet, and there's flames headed in that direction. Naturally, I stop and think, "Do I need to call 911 or has somebody already called?" At this point, I see one of the guys who works for my landlord (this guy has always seemed kinda skeevy to me, and it hasn't been all that long ago that he stopped flying a Trump flag from the back of his pickup) walking out of the landlord's office. I think, "Oh, good. They know about it, so I'm probably not going to have to call 911." Then I notice that this motherfucker is carrying another propane tank. He sets it down next to the other one, ( ) then walks back to the building, goes inside, comes out with a garden hose, and begins spraying water around the tanks. Right about the time he gets the flames closest to the tanks out, the first cop car rolls in with their sirens blaring. This is quickly followed by several other cop cars and a fire truck. I breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that the fire is going to be put out, but I can't help but think about how this was a very near thing. Had just one of those tanks exploded, it would have been enough to create a Very Bad Day for everyone in the park. Because the folks in the trailers closest to the one that was on fire, all have gas grills, with propane tanks. At least one of those would have been damaged enough to leak, so it would have exploded, thus damaging other trailers (not to mention all the cars in the area).
Not just North America. My brother just informed our chat group that Ha Noi is below 10 degrees* so all primary schools are cancelled. *Celsius. It’s high 40s in real temperature. Fucker.
Beats the heck out of golf references. Read about a woman who got out of a responsibility for an accident by saying “That car was at least a 9 iron away”
Even though their Vancouver's the bigger and more important Vancouver, I'm sure they're salty that there's another Vancouver one state down and in the same relative location as them. It's also older and more historically significant
Quick age check: The Couv, WA: 199 years old, founded as a Hudson's Bay trading post P-Town, OR: 172 years old, won the coin flip to embarrass and outshine Portland Maine The Couv, BC: 138 years old, and would probably be the big dog in the PNW if it weren't those (relative) boomers in Seattle. Conclusion: Vancouver WA's past its prime and probably needs to fall into a tarpit
for context, I was there in '88. it was brief and dismal. Portland was a blast and I stuck around for a month.
I got sent out here in ‘07 and the Columbia River Crossing (CRC) was a huge deal. It was an ODOT/WaDOT/FedGov project to ‘replace’* the old I-5 bridge connecting Portland to Vancouver and there was all sorts of back and forth because it would include adding a MAX line (Loot Rail) to Vancouver which had Clark County freaking out. It got cancelled sometime around ‘13. It is now ‘24 and the Interstate River Bridge Replacement (IRBR) program is a huge deal. It is an ODOT/WaDOT/FedGov project to ‘replace’* the old I-5 bridge connecting Portland to Vancouver and there is all sorts of back and forth because it includes adding a MAX line (Loot Rail) to Vancouver which has Clark County freaking out. *read double in size and then spend even more money on enlarging and adding exits than spent on the bridge.
The Interstate Bridge does need to be replaced, yes. Whether the auxiliary projects should or shouldn't be added is a whole another debate, but Clark County needs to suck it up and get their light rail Also, the Couv has gotten a bit more interesting (and I don't mean in the 2A context) in recent years. But just a bit more.
