Really? No thread on the ISIS sympathizer killing a Canadian soldier yesterday?

Yeah, police are saying multiple gunmen, multiple shootings. Guess we'll get a body count later. Fuck.

Damn. How is it security was so laxed? It is the capital of a major western country after all. It must be horrible to be a family member of someone who works there. Not knowing if they are safe or not.

Well, I did hear it on CNN, so who the hell knows if its true.

PMs were discussing increased security because of threats against Canada by ISIL earlier this week.

Ottawa police report they have one of the gunmen in custody. They are looking for others that fled the scene.

Oh, and initial reports of the shooter at the war memorial:

    1) Long haired man
    2) Wearing hoody
    3) With an assault rifle
    4) Very likely a Muslim fanatic.

Excuse the gallows humor, but its the ultimate wordforge thread.

This is probably the sad result of Canada's multicultural immigration policies. It could be French nationalists, but it's probably irate Scottish separatists

The Canadians seem to have the situation under control. Maybe we should hire them to guard the White House.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks as a result of these attacks. On Monday we had some Muslim convert nutjob kill a soldier in Quebec. Today, we have multiple gunmen shooting another soldier and attacking Parliament Hill.

During the FLQ terrorist crisis in 1970, the Canadian government enacted the War Measures Act. It essentially put the entire country in a state of martial law. Many radicals, hippies (not kidding) and French nationalists were rounded up without the need for just cause or a warrant. It was like hitting a fly with a sledge hammer, but the crisis was quickly stopped as a result and most of the FLQ terrorists were in fact arrested and brought to justice.

One more event like this and as crazy at seems, I can see the government giving the War Measures Act a serious look. Canadians in general are much more "law and order" types versus Americans and wouldn't scream as loudly about the suspension of civil liberties if the end result meant weeding out and prosecuting the radicals.

One things is for certain, I wouldn't want to be a Muslim in Canada right now. :(

    It's MP (Member of Parliament).

Already the left-wing and liberal pundits are coming out of the wordwork and blaming the Conservative government for enacting tougher anti-terrorist laws and assisting our allies in the campaign against ISIS. Some of the real fringe conspiracy nuts are calling this is "false flag" operation.

I don't lean left or right, and I'm glad Canada didn't get involved in Bush Jr's Iraq mess, but for crissakes can the left wing and the rest of the nutters just keep their goddamned mouths shut while we deal with a fairly major situation?

Also, how the hell is it the fault of any Conservative or Liberal or Republican or Democrat for the fucking crazy wackaloons being bred within Islam? A lot of misfits like to point fingers at the West but that's like blaming the woman for being raped. These assholes would have been radicalized with or without the help of the evil democracies of the West.

There's a reason the gunmen were running from the direction of the memorial.

So apparently the Sergeant at Arms shot the gunman, and then went back to his office to reload even though he had been shot in the leg.

    Unreal, what a BAMF. :salute:

I like living in a country where our government buildings (except for courthouses) don't have metal detectors. I like the open access of Parliament Hill and the fact that just about anyone can wander around the grounds and even most public spaces inside.

I really fear for what's going to happen after this horrible week. I hope we don't go all PATRIOT Act stupid. :(

Most states have such limited security arrangements. Why should Canada be any different?

True. In Sacramento, by state law, the state legislature is "the people's house" and that means the doors must be open and unlocked 24/7 so that any member of the public can enter at any time. That doesn't include the private offices of the various state reps and senators but it does mean most common areas and the actual chambers of the chambers.

The tour is actually pretty cool as it is cheap, goes over all the art work, architecture, and things like the furnishes which are all original from the 19th century. I especially liked the original and still in use gas lighting with some very fancy crystal lighting systems and the intricately carved wood work. The official portraits of the governors are also cool; especially Gov Brown's original state portrait from the 1970's done in a modern art style (he is now back in office and set to get a 4th term since his first two terms predated the state constitution change limiting governors to two terms).

The capital park made a nice first date location in sactown as you could go to a cafe for coffee or a snack, walk around the park to see the various official monuments & memorials, then walk inside the capital to look at the various art works. You'd better believe the state capital police watch people like hawks though to make sure they don't damage anything especially when you wander in around midnight with your date though maybe the guy was just a horn dog who wanted to watch us make out.

Media is confirming that the piece of shit who perpetrated today's terrorist attack was Canadian-born but converted to Islam and was radicalized by ISIS.

Any connection to the attack from two days ago or just another mental case inspired by what he saw on TV?

I see your left wing nuts are no different than ours here in america.Every time there's a tragedy they come out of the woodwork pointing fingers before knowing all the facts. Sad.

Hopefully this security breach gets rectified and Canada is able to move forward. :techman:

I think it's pretty clear that these guys aren't radicalized by ISIS, so much as brain washed. They go after troubled, mentally ill types and convince them of their cause. Easy to manipulate, whether such nuts are actual Islam converts is another matter altogether.

Recall that the two UK Islamic extremists from Manchester purchased "Islam for Dummies" and "The Koran for Dummies" at Amazon before heading off to wage jihad in Syria. link.

Of course, devout and violent religious fanatics don't have to be theologians to be devout - and fanatical.

The point is that fanatical is the key issue.
